Why?
Because of changes in recreational behavior, dermatologists indicate a considerable global increase in the occurance of skin cancer.
Recently experts estimate that there are more than 200,000 incidences per annum of skin cancer in Germany alone. In Australia it is reported that 50% of people above the age of 40 are affected to some degree by skin cancer.*
Dermatologists warn that particularly children should be protected from long periods of incident solar radiation, e.g. with sun protective textiles.
But also sportsmen and people who occupationally have to remain outdoors sun protection is vital.

Textile UV-Protection
Sun-protective clothing is any garment that can provide adequate protection from the sun. Generally speaking, clothing must have a UPF value of 15 to 50+ (blocks 93 - 98% of UV radiation), and cover or shade sufficient skin to protect a person from the damaging rays of the sun*.
Textiles are predestined for UV-protection. The use of the appropriate textile materials and constructions in particular textiles gives a good protection against intense radiation.
For certain textiles UVPs (Ultraviolet Protection Factors) can be reached which are far above those from sun creams.
It is not possible to assess the UV permeability of textiles (how much UV-radiation goes through textile materials onto skin) by close examination – the measurement techniques are well defined.

Findings
Large effect on the sun protection factor between bright and dull fibers
Tightness of the dull fabric has an exponential influence on sun protection factor Tightness of the bright fabric has nearly no influence
Large effect on the sun protection factor between white and coloured fabrics
Finer yarns (same fabric weight) have better sun protection effect than thicker yarns.
Fibrillation and hairiness has quite a big positive effect on the sun protection factor
Expanded knitted fabric loses most of the sun protection factor
