Oregon Forest Practices Act

• Standards for any commercial activity involving the establishment, management, or harvest of trees on Oregon’s forestlands

• Passed in 1971, updated by BOF/ODF regularly

• Applies to all non-federal forestlands

Vegetation management &Forest Practices Act

Following harvest, FPA requires…

• Seedlings “Free to Grow” within 6 years

Notification Requirement

“Notification of Operations” required at least 15 days in advance:

• Road building• Harvest• Pesticides*• Several others

To notify: Forest Activity Electronic Reporting and Notification System – FERNS

*Only applies to forest management; no notifications required for herbicides applied around homes, landscaping.

Notification Requirement

If operation is near protected resources, Statutory Written Plan is required• 14-day comment period open

to public/subscribers• Forester reviews for adequate

protection of resources

Subscribe using the E-Notification System• Register – same as notifying• Choose an area of interest• Choose activities of interest• Receive e-mail alerts• Submit comments on WP
