“STTP on UTM, CNC and Machining Processes” organized by

Department of Mechanical Engineering, GIMT Guwahati

Department of Mechanical Engineering, GIMT Guwahati organized a five day short term

training programme on “UTM, CNC and Machining Processes” from 12th to 16th December

2016 for lab instructors and technicians. The programme covered the theoretical knowledge

on UTM, CNC and machining and also gave them a hands-on experience by providing a

practical exposure of UTM, CNC lathe, conventional lathe, milling machine etc. The experts

for the programme were Mr. Nandan Kanan Das, Assistant Workshop Superintendent, IIT

Guwahati who delivered lectures and conducted practical sessions on UTM and Machining

Processes and Mr. Prabin Kumar Bora, Technical Officer, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering,

Tezpur University, who delivered lectures and conducted practical sessions on CNC. There

was no registration fee for the participants. A total of 35 (Thirty five) participants registered

for the programme of which almost 50% participants were from institutes like PCPS Girls’

Polytechnic Guwahati, Assam Don Bosco University, NITS Mirza, Royal School of

Engineering and Technology, RIST Meghalaya, Scholars’ Institute of Technology and

Management and the rest were from GIMT Guwahati.

The programme began with an inauguration ceremony on 12th December 2016 which was

attended by Prof. S. K. Dutta, Principal, GIMT Guwahati, Mr. N. K. Das Assistant Workshop

Superintendent, IIT Guwahati, Mr. M. R. Singha, Dean (Academic), GIMT Guwahati, Capt.

(Retd.) Navy I. P. Sharma, Dean (Administration), GIMT Guwahati, Prof P. K. Dutta, Senior

Professor, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, GIMT Guwahati, Dr. B. J. Bora, HoD (i/c),

Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, GIMT Guwahati and many other faculty members of

GIMT Guwahati. The expert for the day was Mr. N. K. Das who conducted a visit to the lab

in the first half of the programme and conducted a theory session on UTM in the second half.

Mr. Das conducted another theoretical as well as a practical session on UTM the following

day i.e. 13th December 2016. On 14th December 2016, Mr. Das conducted a theoretical

session on machining processes in the first half and went for a practical session in the second

half. Mr. P. K. Bora conducted theory and practical sessions on CNC on 15th and 16th

December 2016. The programme ended with a valedictory session on 16th December 2016

which, along with the dignitaries of the inaugural session, was also attended by Mr. R. Das,

President, SSA Society and Mr. A. Chowdhury, Member, SSA Society. The participants

received their certificates in the ceremony and the organizing committee collected the

feedback of the participants on the programme.
