sions Simulation Labsallow resident physiciansto work through realis-tic problems in a hospi-tal-like setting and prob-lem solve.This is the second visit

to HPSL for resident phy-sicians from the Emer-gencyMedicine, FamilyMedicine, Internal Med-icine, Transitional Yearand Traditional Osteo-pathic Rotating Intern-ship programs.“The simulation labs at

Schoolcraft College areamazing and provide awell-rounded list of tech-nical opportunities ourGraduateMedical Edu-cation program needs forresident physician train-ing,” said Internal Med-icine ProgramDirectorJames Kruer, M.D,. Grad-uateMedical Education,St. MaryMercyHospi-tal. “This medical simula-tion-based training allowsour resident physicians toapply ‘real-life’ medicalpractice and knowledgein a safe virtual environ-ment before they evensee a patient with thatcondition.”Opened in spring 2011,

the HPSLwere original-ly designed for School-craft College nursingstudents. With state-of-

the-art technology andAdvanced Life Support-designed drills, the labsare also used regularlyby EMT and paramedicsin training, care groups,K-12 students, contract

training and SchoolcraftCollege continuing educa-tion students. “We trulyappreciate having School-craft College’s partner-ship in helping us trainthe next generation of

physicians,” said SusanGreenwood-Clark, direc-tor, St. MaryMercy Grad-uateMedical Education.HPSL features include:• High-fidelity mani-

kins that mimic humanbehavior (i.e. crying,hearing, pulse) duringrapid response simulationscenarios.• Simulation rooms

with the ability to captureaudio and video, whichcan be reviewed in thedebrief area.• Mini-stations set up to

teach proper techniquesto place a central venouscatheter, nasogastricintubation and orotrache-al intubations.• A LAP VR® laparo-

scopic trainer that allowshaptic-controlled proce-dure practice for cutting,suturing, needle-drivingand knot tying. Trainees

can view recorded post-procedure data.• A heart and lung box

allowing for listening andfamiliarizing with dif-ferent heart and lungsounds.“The emergency situa-

tions that are simulated inour labs are scenarios ourcommunity might ulti-mately find themselves ina hospital for,” explainedWilliamDunbar, Dean ofOccupational Programs

& Economic Develop-ment, Schoolcraft Col-lege. “By enhancing thetraining opportunities forour local health care pro-viders, they are betterprepared to handle theseemergencies or otherstandard procedures.”The community is invit-
