In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness
By: Deacon Jim Shipman
Jesus quotes the Prophet Isaiah in the Gospel, “You shall indeed hear but not understand, you shall indeed look but never see. Gross is the heart of this people, they will hardly hear with their ears, they have closed their eyes, lest they see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their hearts and be converted, and I heal them.”
That scripture was true then and is true today. We say that we be-lieve in God, but fail to see His Glory surrounding us. We don’t hear the Word of God because our society hears what it wants to hear and ignores God’s Truth. Our eyes fill our minds with images that twist our thinking to accept what is evil as normal. We wonder why so many things seem so crazy and confused.
In the Gospel Jesus is teaching the crowd the parable of the sower. The seed is the Word of God that falls on the path, on rocky ground, on the weeds, and the rich soil. The point of the parable is that the Rich Soil are the people who Hear the Word, Accept the Word, and Live the Word of God in their dai-ly lives. Our country was once filled with that Rich Soil, those who believe in God.
Unfortunately, our country has be-come barren, rocky, weed infested ground, with less of that Rich Soil, the “Believers in God’s Word”. Our Lord is calling us to cultivate that poor soil, so that God’s Word will produce an abundant crop of souls for Heaven. The Holy Spirit gives us the tools to do this job when we Hear, See and Under-stand GOD’S WORD.
