    1. OpentheSPSSdataset.SeeFigure1.1.2. Atthebottommiddleofthescreentherearetwoviewoptions“DataView”

    (thisviewdisplaystheresponsesgivenbysurveyparticipants’usingthenumericcodeassignedtoresponses)and“VariableView”(thisviewdisplaysthevariablesinthedatasetandthetheircharacteristics.AlwaysworkfromtheVariableView.

    3. Thefirstcolumninvariableviewis“Name.”Name(alsoknownasvariablename)displaysashort-handtagassignedtoaspecificvariable.Itusuallycontainsenoughinformationtodescribethevariableitrepresents(e.g.“Marital”referstorespondentsmaritalstatus.)NotethatNamehastohavealphanumericcharacters,nevercontainsspacesbetweencharacters,andarerarelylongerthat8characters.

    4. Thesecondcolumninvariableviewis“Type.”Thisreferstowhetheravariableusesnumericoralphabeticcode.Inthisclasswewillalwaysusevariablesofthetype“Numeric.”

Thethirdcolumnis“Width”.Widthisusedtodeterminehowmuchspacetogiverespondentstoanswer.Forexampleifrespondentswereaskedwhatyeartheywerebornthewidthwouldhavetobe4tocapturethefourspacestakenwhenrecordingyearofbirth(e.g.1986).Forthepurposeofthisclasswidthcanstayatdefaultbutnotethatbyclickingonacellunderwidthitispossibletoincreaseordecreaseavariableswidth.

    6. Thefourthcolumnis“Decimal”andisusedtoandisusedwhenusingNOTWHOLENUMBERS.

    7. Thefifthcolumnis“Label”(sometimesreferredtoasvariablelabel).Itistypicallyeitheraverbatimdescriptionofthevariableorashorthandversionofthevariable.Thecellspresentedhere,andalltheothers,canbeexpandedbyincreasingthewidthofthecolumn.

    8. Thesixthcolumnis“Values.”DoubleclickonacellandawindowlikethatinFigure2willpopup.Thesecondwindowshowsthenumericvalueofeachattributeandthelabelassociatedwiththatlabel.InFigure1.2forexample,avalueof“1”representstheanswer“Yes.”

    9. Theseventhcolumnis“Missing.”DoubleclickonacellandwindowlikethatinFigure1.3willpopup.Whenarespondentrespondstoaquestioninawaythatisnotusefulintheanalysisitcanberemovedbyplacingthenumericlabelinoneofthecellsprovided.InFigure3theresponsesof“0”and“9”areremovedfromanalysis.

    10. Columnseight,nine,ten,andelevenwillnotbeusedthissemester.Assignment:

    1. SecuretheSPSSsoftware2. Downloadthedataset3. ReadtheSPSSInterfacesectiontwice.4. Meetthreeclassmatesandexchangecontactinformation.5. Writeareport:
