Summer games openwith celebrations■ Matt Roloff from TLC’s “Little People,Big World” and Gov. Brian Schweitzerfeatured at opening event May 11

State Summer Games in Bozeman May 11-13 featurea high-energy opening ceremonies Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Brick Breeden fieldhouse on the MontanaState University campus.

More than 1,600 athletes along with 1,800 coachesand volunteers combine with 5,000 family members,friends and spectators to fill the arena in celebration ofthe games. Athletes will participate in 13 sports.

Emcees are John Parkes from Murdoch’s Ranch &Home Supply, Games Premier Sponsor; and JJ Petersen, Great Falls Lions athlete. Other highlightsinclude:

■ Special guest Matt Roloff from TLC’s “LittlePeople, Big World” anchors the evening. Roloff viewsthe social stigmas and physical limitations ofdwarfism not as obstacles but as opportunities. Withhumor and inspiration, he brings motivating stories tochallenge the audience and demonstrate his own success as a Fortune 500 salesman and entrepreneur.

■ Gov. Brian Schweitzer, Honorary Games HeadCoach, makes a cameo appearance at OpeningCeremonies in support of the athletes and the Games.

■ The cast of “It’s Our School, Too”, composed oflocal middle and high school students, featurevignettes that highlight true to life experiences as toldby Special Olympics athletes. The play, commissionedin 2010 and written for Special Olympics, Inc. as partof a national project, is part of a lobal effort to educateyouth by providing them with strategies for positivelyaffecting school climate.

■ Athletes’ and coaches’ oaths are presented byAlison Bowers, Bozeman Outreach Bobcats athlete;and Peter Fields, MS Director of Athletics.

■ Bozemanarea class-rooms and students haveadopted morethan 25 SpecialOlympicsteamsstatewide.Nearly 600students willjoin theiradopted teamsduringOpeningCeremonies ina show of sup-port, accept-ance andrespect forpeople of allabilities.

■ TheMighty Flick, athree-piecehigh-energydance bandare familiarfaces in the

Montana music scene since the late eighties with regular performances throughout the state. Theirenthusiasm for music is contagious, sometimes inspirational, always entertaining.

■ Bozeman High School pep band is featured during the pre-show, along with local cheerleaders,athletes, pep rally leaders, and MSU mascot, Champ.

Closing Ceremonies in Shroyer Gymnasium on theMSU campus are held Friday, May 13 at 8 a.m. andinclude a special appearance by Frenchtown studentMorissa Trunzo, talented vocalist, song writer andwinner of the recent Special Olympics MontanaProject UNIFY song contest. She performs her original composition, “Just Believe”.

During Closing Ceremonies, the winners of theannual Optimum/Chevy Raffle will be announced.

Optimum/Chevy Raffle ticketsales are sure to skyrocket at theSpecial Olympics State SummerGames in Bozeman May 11- 13.

While money raised by the raffleticket sales will support SpecialOlympics Montana, ticket sellerswill have an added incentive forreaching big numbers. Always gamefor a good challenge, SOMTPresident and CEO, Bob Norbie, hasdonated his body to the cause,offering athletes the opportunity toturn him into NEON NORBIE if raf-fle ticket sales hit $380,000 ormore.

Raffle tickets are on salethroughout the Games and theBozeman community until thedrawing at the Closing Ceremonieson Friday, May 13 in the ShroyerGym on the MSU campus.Ceremonies begin at 8:00 am.

Grand Prize is a fully loaded 2011Chevy Silverado Pickup Truck.Other prizes include a $1,000 TownPump gift card, a $500 gift certifi-cate to Bob Ward’s, a $250 gift certificate to Murdoch’s Home andRanch Supply, one year of free oilchanges from Tire Rama, and pizzafor one year from Pizza Hut.

The neon-ing of Norbie will takeplace on the stage during the raffledrawing at Closing Ceremonies.Special Olympics athletes will taketo the stage to dye and paint BobNorbie.

Chevy truck raffle tickets to benefit games

Montanans with Developmental Disabilities WeekKyler Morrison, Whitefish, has successfully lobbied the 62nd Montana

Legislature to establish Montanans with Disabilities Week annually everysecond week in May. House Joint Resolution No. 5, introduced by KeithRegier, R-Kalispell, designates the week in observation of full inclusion ofpeople with developmental disabilities into society. Regier stated that hisinspiration for the bill was Kyler Morrison, a Special Olympics Montanaathlete and member of the Special Olympics Montana Board of Directors.The genesis for the Montanans with Developmental Disabilities Week wasborne of Morrison’s lifelong experience as a person with a developmentaldisability. Himself an active member of his community, Morrison believesthat people with developmental disabilities can and do make meaningfulcontributions to their communities and to society as a whole.
