What’s a Roadmap?

Gartner defines it as:

“A graphical representation that is used to illustrate the milestones and deliverables required to transition to a future state from a current state over a specific period of time”

What’s in a Roadmap:

• Strategy Statement (strategic priorities)

• Initiatives & Projects (timeline)• Risks / Potential

Difference between Roadmap and Project Plan

Road Map

• How to achieve business outcomes

• How do initiatives relate to each other

Project Plan

• How to execute initiatives

• Resources, Dependencies

A SharePoint Roadmap only?• Overlapping activities / initiatives

between different teams / departments

• Ideally, an Enterprise Architecture board oversees all roadmap activities

How do you develop your Roadmap?

Step 1: Assemble the Team

Stakeholder Analysis

• Who needs to deliver outcomes?

• Who owns the resources?

Step 2: Where are you now?

• Analyse the current situation

• Analyse/align with “higher-level” roadmaps (IT / company) ( EA board)

Step 3: Define Future State

• Remember: Future State may contain multiple targets (“simplified infrastructure”, “Employee self-service platform live”, …)

• Align with business goals

Step 4: Milestones&Deliverables • For each future state target, define

initiatives and corresponding milestones and outcomes– Rationalize if/where necessary

• High-level first, drill down where required

• Iterate often
