The Sopranos in Nashua A couple of big names from HBO’s The Sopranos hit the NH Liquor Store off of exit 6 in Nashua yesterday. John Ventimiglia (who played Artie Bucco) and Vincent Pastore (w ho played Salvatore 'Big Pussy' Bonpensiero) took a few hours to promote the release of The Sopranos Wine.

A very good sized crowd turned up to welcome these iconic stars of one of TV’s all-time greatest shows. Both stars were in good spirits and cracked jokes and posed for countless pictures, while signing bottles of Sopranos wine and anything else people shoved in front of them.

You've watched it, now drink it: "The Sopranos" wineTue Oct 28, 12:24 pm ETNEW YORK (Reuters) – "The Sopranos," the U.S. television series about a New Jersey mob family, has sparked an unusual spinoff -- a line of Italian wines that will be launched in the United States this fall.Sopranos Wines are being produced under a licensing agreement between the TV network HBO and New-York based Vesuvio Import Company. The wines will be distributed by Duggan's Distillers Products Corp.."We feel that these quality Italian wines are the perfect complement to all of our other carefully planned product extensions for "The Sopranos" brand," James Costos, HBO spokesman, said in a statement.A joint statement said the line from various Italian wineries would feature a variety of wines ranging a Chianti DOCG, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir priced up to $11.99 to a higher end Chianti Classico at $23.99 and a Chianti Classico Reserva at $29.99.The Vesuvio Import Company, created to develop this new line, was named after the famed fictional restaurant depicted in the series that ran for six seasons over more than eight years, ending in June 2007.It's not the series' first overlap into wine.Actress Lorraine Bracco, who played Dr. Jennifer Melfi in the series, launched Bracco Wines in 2006.(Editing by Patricia Reaney)

Sopranos Pinot Grigio and Pinot Grigio FriuliI’ve been slacking on the new posts for the past week, as I’ve been regrouping after the Wine Blogger’s Conference. But finally, yesterday I pulled together some wines I had in the tasting queue and did a blind tasting with a number of Pinot Grigio wines. Over the next few posts, I’ll share those reviews and a summary to give you a quick reference for a few Pinot Grigios. The first wine that was in my tasting is the first one I’m posting a review about, and actually I’ll do a couple wines in this review since two in my tasting were related. First up is The Sopranos Pinot Grigio, an Italian PG that is produced via a partnership between Vesuvio Wine Import Company (named after a restaurant in the series), licensing with HBO and winemakers in Italy. There are two different Pinot Grigios available under the Sopranos label and both of them were part of my tasting.

The Sopranos Pinot Grigio

The entry-level Pinot Grigio under The Sopranos label comes from Provincia di Pavia, a region in central northern Italy that produces mostly white wines and Pinot Noir. This Pinot Grigio has an extremely light color, not uncommon for the variety. The aromas are light, but the most pronounced aromas a a soft honeysuckle, and a slight nutty aroma. There’s also a hint of white peach and apple. The palate has medium acidity with lemon and apple flavors up front, but lacks concentration. In general, I don’t expect much concentration from an Italian Pinot Grigio, but this was a little less than I expect. The finish brings a hazelnut flavor along with honeysuckle.Wine: The SopranosVariety: Pinot GrigioVintage: 2007Alcohol: 12%Rating: 84Price: $10.99

August 3, 2009The Sopranos Pinot Grigio Friuli

The other Pinot Grigio under The Sopranos label comes from Friuli, one of the prized white wine regions in the northeastern corner of Italy. While Friuli is known for it’s exceptional white wines, this particular wine doesn’t come from the best part of Friuli. The grapes in this wine are from the Grave region, where the wines are typically lighter and less elegant than those from the best parts of Friuli. Nonetheless, this Pinot Grigio is a clear step up from the entry-level Sopranos Pinot Grigio. It’s almost watery color, similar to its counterpart from Provincia di Pavia. This wine has great intensity relative to other Pinot Grigios. A powerful floral perfume dominates the nose, along with pear, straw and mineral. The acidity is perfect in this wine. Pear and lemon dominate the palate. Honey and a subtle nutty characteristic come in on the finish, although the finish is somewhat quick.I’m not a big fan of Pinot Grigio, but I found this wine to be enjoyable.

Of Course They Love Their Own Wines…

But for this article, I wouldn’t let winemakers or those directly associated with importing, selling or promoting a wine comment on their own product. Two gentlemen gamely went along with this and suggested their second favorite summer wines.

Chuck Mansfield, a winemaker at Sonoma’s Hop Kiln, enjoys Argentinean malbec as his summer sipper. Its “undertones of campfire smokiness hold their own with the smoky flavors of barbeque, one of the quintessential summer activities.”

Mark Gonsalves, Managing Partner for The Sopranos Wines, notes that picking one favorite wine for summer “is like asking Willy Wonka to name his favorite candy!” He gives a “double thumbs up” to pinot grigio (“It’s light and easy to drink.”) and rosé (“Definitely a crowd pleaser!”)
