These visual images are displayed on a screen in response to musical tone signals or performance information provided by an electronic musical in- strument. This enables listener viewers to see on the screen a picture of the player and/or instrument currently dominating the music by a solo or musi- cally loudest part.mDWM

43.75.Tv METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR ,

DIGITALLY GENERATING MUSICAL NOTES

David T. Starkey, assignor to Gulbransen, Incorporated 4 September 1990 (Class 84/603); filed 17 January 1989

This digital synthesis type of dectronic musical instrument uses digital processing techniques not only to impart the desired harmonic structure and fundamental frequency but also to control the, amplitude envelope of the tone wave. "Only after all of the harmonic structure processing, all amplitude scaling, and all panning/mixing has been performed in digital circuitry, are the four outputs converted by digital to analog converters into analog musical outputs. Part of the digital processing includes a digital scaling circuit using a barrel interpolator to scale each sample from 1/2 to 31/32 and a shift right register to scale each •ample between 1 and 1/32,768."--DWM

Mark S. Bredesen and Elliott D. Schmerler, assignors to Bloodline Technology

30 April 1991 (Class 128/715); filed 4 February 1988

The patent shows a stethoscope having the usual acoustic function plus a computerized unit that receives its input from an electret microphone located in the chestpiece. The signal received by the microphone is digitized and stored in a memory. The body sounds are recorded from several body

locations and categorized according to specific characteristics to form a matrix of information. This is then compared against a plurality of stored matrices using a technique similar to signature analysis. When a match is found, a diagnosis is displayed on an LCD screen.--SFL

43.75.Tv INPUT APPARATUS OF ELECTRONIC

SYSTEM FOR EXTRACTING PITCH DATA FROM COMPRESSED INPUT WAVEFORM SIGNAL

Shigeru Uchiyama, assignor to Casio Computer Company 28 May 1991 {Class 84/603); filed in Japan 8 October 1987

The problem of extracting fundamental frequency data from a highly complex waveform, such as that of a guitar tone, is approached in this patent by first compressing the waveform by logarithmic conversion, then converting into a digital signal before extracting data for the on/off states corresponding to axis crossings or other predetermined threshold values.-- DWM

43.75.Tv ELECTRONIC MUSICAL INSTRUMENT IN

WHICH MUSICAL TONES ARE GENERATED ON THE BASIS OF PITCHES EXTRACTED FROM AN INPUT

WAVEFORM SIGNAL

Shigeru Uchiyama and Katsuhiko Obata, assignors to Casio Comput- er Company

28 May 1991 (Class 84/616); filed in Japan 24 October 1986

This patent to the same first-named inventor and assignee as patent 5,018,427 (reviewed above) applies the fundamental frequency data to an electronic guitar or guitar synthesizer to generate electronically tone signals having the same fundamental frequency as the played string for which the fundamental frequency has been measured. This may seem like a long way around, but it enables a synthesizer to generate a wide variety of tones, from a timbre or envelope standpoint, from the same played note. Twelve Japa- nese patent applications underlie this single U.S. patent for which there are 39 U.S. patent references and 13 foreign patent references. The system de- scribed is highly complex.--DWM

43.85.--e SONIC DIGITIZER COIL MEASUREMENT SYSTEM

Bruce E. Joy et aL, assignors to Westinghouse Electric Corporation 27 March 1990 (Class 364/560); filed 2 March 1988

It is desired to determine accurately the shape and dimensions of stator coils for large electrical generators. A pl/•nar array of microphones is placed near the stator coil. The microphones are arranged in groups. Sound emis- sion points corresponding to points on' the surface of the coil are typically spark gap sources. Sound detected by various combinations of source and microphone groups is analyzed by computers to produce a replica of the shape and dimensions on a display.--MDB

Phillip Gattoy and Shu-Ren Chen, assignors to ACS Communications 22 May 1990 {Class 181/22); filed 29 July 1988

"An acoustical voice tube, comprising an acoustical hollow upper piece and an acoustical hollow lower piec9 in hinged connection permits voice or sound tube positioning over a'.large area without changing the sound characteristics."mMDB

43.88.Ar VERY-HIGH-PRESSURE TRANSDUCER, PARTICULARLY FOR DETECTING THE PRESSURE OF A HYDRAULIC FLUID •'•

G. M. Timossi et aL, assignors to Marelli Autsonica S.p.A, Italy 23 October 1990 {Class 367/140); filed 21 July 1989

The transducer comprises a deformable support structure upon which are mounted a set of piezoresistive sensors arranged in a bridge circuit con- figuration. The support structure is resiliently deformed by the pressure in a fluid, such as a hydraulic fluid, which is in contact with the support struc- ture thereby providing an electrical signal indicative of the value of the pressure.--WT
