Solutions and mixtures

Solubility experiment

Can anything change solutions?

• Factors that affect solubility:1. Temperature: The higher it is, it can dissolve more

solid materials (sugar) and less gas (carbon dioxide).2. Pressure: When you increase the surrounding

pressure, you can usually dissolve more gases in the liquid. (e.g. soda can).

3. Substance structure: Some things dissolve easier in one kind of substance than another (e.g. sugar in water ; oil in water ).

Solubility is the ability of the solvent (water) to dissolve the solute (sugar).

1) Which one is a mixture?

Let’s take a quiz!

2) Which diagram represents an homogenous mixture?

Let’s take a quiz!

3) Are all solutions mixtures?

Let’s take a quiz!

4) Are all mixtures solutions?

Yes!!!!!!

No!!!!

There are THREE types of mixtures:

SOLUTIONS COLLOIDS SUSPENSION

An homogenous

mixture.

look like solutions, but their particles

are too small to settle to the

bottom of their container.

Particles are large and settle out, unless the

mixture is stirred

constantly.

• Heterogenous.• DO NOT separate on standing.• Scatter light---- Tyndall effect.

COLLOIDS

• E.g. milk.

• Heterogenous.• Particles settle out.• May scatter light, but are not transparent.• E.g. Sand and water.
