INTRODUCTIONBiomass obtained from biological materials such as
plants, trees, waste.
Use of non-renewable energy cause environmental pollution and also they gets depleted.
Pollution free, freely available renewable sources are best alternative.
Solar power plants are widely used but its main problem is variability.
4
Contd...To overcome the disadvantages of both power plants
they are combined
By shared use of some of the equipments effective cost is less than simple addition
Effective operating hours and therefore overall energy generation is higher
Hence this can be considered as technology for future
5
PLANT SCHEMATIC
6
Superheated steam required to generate useful power Requires almost 80% of the energy from the boiler to
reach saturated vapour phase. Use solar energy for this purpose. Biomass supported plant can contribute to generate
electrical energy continuouslyAn auxiliary boiler is used to heat water whose fuel
is provided from the biomass plant.
7
MAJOR SYSTEM COMPONENTS
Parabolic trough concentrator Biomass Gasifier Boiler (producer gas burner) Super heated steam turbine
8
Parabolic Trough Concentrator High efficiency and durable mirror film technology Less thermal losses. Heat transfer fluid (usually oil) runs through the tube to absorb the concentrated sunlight.Heat is used to produce super heated high pressure steam
9
A solar thermal collector gathers the heat from the solar radiation and gives it to a fluid named as heat transport fluid. Then the fluid passes to a heat exchanger. The heated wated goes to the boiler for steam generation.
10
BIOMASS GASIFIER Biomass gasification is a process
of converting solid biomass fuel into a gaseous combustible gas (called producer gas).
Syngas consists of mainly hydrogen
The advantage of gasification is that using the syngas is potentially more efficient than direct combustion of the original fuel because it can be combusted at higher temperatures.
11
SYNGAS Syngas is usually a product of gasification and the main
application is electricity generation. Syngas can be produced from biomass, by reaction with
steam (steam reforming) CH4 + H2O → CO + 3H2 CO + H2O → CO2 + H2
12
BOILERProvide superheated steam Designed to burn syngas from gasifier Fuel to boiler is provided from the biomass plantSteam from the boiler is given to the turbine in case of insufficient solar radiationCombustion gases from the boiler are conveyed to fuel gas cleaning system and cleaned gases are released to atmosphere.
13
EXTRACTION (CONDENSING) STEAM TURBINE
The extraction turbine contains two outlets
The first outlet extracts the steam with intermediate pressure for the feeding of the heating process
Second outlet extracts the remaining steam with low-pressure steam for the condensation.
The condensed water then goes back to the boiler for the regeneration of the electricity of power.
14
15
The world’s first plant combining biomass and solar thermal energy in Catalonia, spain
It can generate 25 MW of power enough to supply 75000 housesIt consist of almost 2,688 solar panelsUsing this renewable energy plant will prevent 24,500 tones of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere.
16
ADVANTAGESRedundant energy is stored during sunny days
When the parameters of steam cannot reach rated value during insufficient solar radiation, then biomass plant starts to operate
Ensures 100% use of renewable sources to generate electricity
Reduce pollution and increase the efficiency
17
CONCLUSIONStable and continuous mode of operationEnsure to use 100% renewable sourcesReduces the usage of biomass. Lowers the carbon footprint by not burning the biomass. Suitable for distributed power generation in any location. Efficient in solar thermal energy conversion. This plant can be considered as most important modes to
use solar thermal and biomass power in future
