Boro Park Center For Rehabilitation & Healthcare

Location4915 10TH AVE, Brooklyn

Boro Park Center for Rehabilitation and Health Care is a Brooklyn-based skilled nursing facility which has assumed a leadership role in the provision of comprehensive rehabilitative health care, offering individuals the opportunity to develop the essential skills needed to restore their independence.

On the second and third floors, resident rooms and common core spaces were gut renovated, receiving new modern residential style furnishings and finishes. These programmatic spaces included Nursing Stations, Fireplace Lounges, Resident Dining Rooms and Private Dining Rooms.

We were tasked with renovating these spaces, which are dedicated to short-term rehabilitation residents. The design theme took its inspiration from the phy sical movement of therapeutic activities, featuring sweeping arcs and curves. Aesthetic balance was achieved by juxtaposing a rectilinear geometry across ceilings, column plasters, and wall panels. Artwork and accent panels add a visual “pop” to neutral walls which were purposely muted so as not to “compete” with the geometric floors. Earth and wood tones strike a warm, natural chord contributing to overall design harmony.

Boro Park Center wished to promote greater resident choice and independence by providing greater spatial variety in its amenity areas. Working within the existing footprint of a typical resident floor, we were able to consolidate inefficiently planned support areas to create additional dining and lounge spaces. This spatial restructuring was part of an overall environmental upgrade which included new interior finishes, furnishings, fixtures, lighting, impact protection, and soft goods. We faced a significant spatial challenge in some of the smaller resident rooms where we used combination dresser/wardrobe units to improve furniture clearances and specified lighter colors and textures to make the rooms “feel larger”. 5

The Pratt Pavilion for Rehabilitation and Healing, Glen Cove, NYAmerican Institute of Architects Archi Award – Excellence in Architecture (2011)

Well known for consistently providing superior medical and rehabilitative care, the Pratt Pavilion imparts the very real sense that one is with extended family. Guests' needs are attended to in a hotel-like interior, ensconced within the breathtaking grandeur of rich woodlands on the historic grounds of this former estate. Our design goal was simple, to merge five star luxury and gentility with cutting edge health care and technology. We carried this theme throughout the newly appointed lobby and amenity areas and into the new therapy spaces. This state-of-the-art rehabilitation suite was created through the conversion of an existing former dining area. Curved forms and finishes simulate movement and portray a great setting for rehabilitation giving this facility the look and feel of an upscale health club. 6

Client Foot Locker NYC

Location440 Broadway, New York

Foot Locker, the primarily mall based retailer of sneakers, footwear and sportswear has opened their first SOHO, based location on Broadway in the landmarked SOHO Cast Iron District.

The large open Ground Floor retail plan with tall cast iron columns, exposed ceiling, original wood floors and brick walls, reflects SOHO’s original industrial loft aesthetic.

The building was reconfigured to include a new elevator, stairways, HVAC, plumbing and electrical work. We worked with Foot Locker to adapt their updated design graphics, custom fixtures, signage and lighting to outfit the new SOHO store.

We worked with the owner of the building, Thor Equities to secure approval from the Board of Standards and Appeals for a variance to allow retail use in the SOHO M1-5B district, which doesn’t allow retail use as of right. Additionally we secured approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission.

Immediately upon opening, the new SOHO Foot Locker became one of the company’s top grossing locations in the country.

Spanning between the rehabilitated Union Square District and the now trendy Meat Packing District in New York City, 14th street has long been known for its honky tonk discounter type stores. We designed a new David Z store to reflect the company's version of culturally diverse street fashion and downtown funk to an area that has become a hip happening retailing street. Located in a former Woolworth's store space, the new David Z store brings a cultural and aesthetic experience to rival the experience that people first felt when they walked into Woolworth's in its heyday. Woolworth's had the Muzak, bright lighting, the smell of shoes and other things, and the magical, fun feeling of a circus combined with an amusement park.
