Fall    

Like  a  herd  of  buffalo  I  heard  the  thunder  of  running  and  dust  

plumes  like  blood  blooms  wet  and  modest  in  the  cautious  grass  

precipice.  To  fall  further  meant  dirt  and  under  that  and  under  

that.  Forgotten  and  bought  and  sold  and  traded  for  old  hats  

and  new  beaded  beginnings.  Slick  like  birthday  suits  taut  

across  saw  bones.  I  saw  horses.  And  a  moon  on  the  horizon  

like  the  wide  open  mouth  of  evening.  I  fell  like  something  

ephemeral  and  choreographed.  In  a  past  life  I  was  disfigured  

and  broken.  Before  that  something  wild  with  hooves.  Even  

earlier  were  feathers  and  spiral  diving.  Birds  dropping  from  

the  air.  What  a  thought.  What  a  feeling.
