SKOLTECH AS A PART OF ECOSYSTEM
SKOLTECH AT A GLANCE
o Started in 2011 as a unique graduate Russian institution in an international
context
o Being developed in collaboration with MIT
o Built on the triple helix model of integrated Teaching, Research, and
Innovation
o An integral part of the Skolkovo innovation ecosystem
o Research with consideration of use, entrepreneurship and innovation
o Strong focus on academic collaboration with Russian and international
partners
2013 Programs of IT and Energy
Biomed program piloting
21 faculty
65 M.Sc. students
9 PhD students
14 Postdocs
Plan for a steady state
1,200 students
300 postdocs

5 Programs (IT, Biomed,
Energy, Space, Nuclear)
SKOLTECH MODEL
Established in collaboration with MIT Skoltech
uses best practices of western higher education
institutions :
o Academic freedom
o Tenure
o Faculty recruitment from the international
market
o International peer review for promotion
tenure and research funding
o Extensive internal opportunities for
competitive research funding
Skoltech has no
departments;
built around Centers
of Research, Education
and Innovation
(CREIs)
Each CREI (varies from
CREI to CREI):
10 faculty
15-20 postdocs
60 students
CREI CONCEPT
5 priority areas, 3 centers for each area, active
industry involvement
Goal: forming centers for research, education and innovation (CREIs), jointly with world leading institutes, to
meet real needs of the Russian economy in priority areas, as defined by development strategy of the Russian
Federation
CREI structure
CREIs established: Stem cell research
Biomedical engineering
Electro-Chemical Energy Storage
Advanced Materials
Integrated Center for Hydrocarbon Recovery
CREIs in final stages of planning: Modeling, Analysis and Design of Energy
Systems
Quantum Materials
Nuclear Systems and Materials
Computer enabled Science & Engineering
Space Research and Technology
CENTER FOR STEM CELL RESEARCH
Partner universities: Vavilov Institute of General Genetics RAS
(Russia) and University Medical Centre Groningen (The
Netherlands)
Main areas of research:
• Create transplantable stem cells from induced pluripotent cells
(these cells can then form into various types of cells to assist in
treating diseases);
• Develop patient specific cellular systems for drug screening
and determine preclinical safety and efficacy of cellular-based
therapies for handover to existing and new startup, high-tech
biomedicine companies
Co-Director:
Sergey Kiselev
Vavilov Institute
Co-Director :
Peter Lansdorp
Groningen
Director :
Professor Anton Berns
until recently the Director of Research and
Chairman of the Board of Directors of the
Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam and
Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital.
CREI FOR ADVANCED STRUCTURE, PROCESSES
AND MATERIALS
Partner universities: Delft University of Technology (the Netherlands),
University of Leven (Belgium), University of South Carolina, University of
Dayton (USA), Technical University of Berlin, Central Aerohydrodynamic
Institute, Institute of Strength Physics and Materials Science (Russia)
Main areas of research:
• Design of nano-engineered structural composites for toughness
• Predictive models for damage, strength and fatigue of fiber reinforced
composites
• Integrated modeling of manufacturing and properties for composite
infrastructure
Director:
Professor Zafer Gurdal
Before - Aerospace Structures Chair Faculty of
Aerospace Engineering Delft University of Technology
(TU Delft)
Co-Director:
Professor Andrey Ushakov
CEO of R&D enterprise ApATeCh (Applied Advanced
Technologies)
CREI FOR BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING
Partner universities: MSU, Koch Institute of Integrative
Cancer Research at MIT
Main areas of research:
• Multi-disciplinary research and training program on RNA
Technology
• Novel therapeutics to diseases of importance to Russia
• RNA delivery technology to uncover genetic basis of liver
biology and disease
Director:
Professor Victor Kotelianski
Before – Vice-President Research in Alnylam
Pharmaceuticals; Director Research Biogen Inc.
CREI research groups leads
Anderson (Koch Institute), Kabanov (MSU), Langer (Koch
Institute), Sharp (Koch Institute), Dontsova (MSU), Klyachko
(MSU)
INDUSTRY COLLABORATION
Examples of CREIs founded jointly with industrial partners:
Electro-chemical energy storage
Industrial partners: Federal Grid Company, System Operator, Holding IDGC,
En+Group, RAO US, RusHydro, Energy Forecasting Agency, VNIPIenergoprom
Advanced Materials and Structures
Industrial partners: Russian Helicopters, Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation,
Oboronprom , United Engine Corporation, United Aircraft Corporation, S.P. Korolev
Rocket and Space Corporation “Energia”
