Škofja Loka lies where the rivers Poljanska sora and Selška sora meet and become one. The name itself links to the rivers: Loka means medow area, while Škofja comes from the fact that bishops used to owne the town.

The history of Škofja Loka is dated back to the year 973 when eperor Oton II gave the old setelment Loka (todays Stara Loka) to the bishop Abraham along with Selška valley, most of Poljanska valley and Sorško polje. The setelment was registerd as a market in 1248, and as a town in 1274. In the early 14th century a wall was resurected around the town with 5 doors and a ditch. Beacuse the bishops couldn‘t always be in the town a governor was to be there instead of them, and he would live in the castle wich is now a museum. Today it is the oldest town in Slovenia after Ptuj.
