Welcome to the 2016 Pulling Together Canoe Journey, a “Journey Back to the Future”. We will be travelling through Lil’wat, In-SHUCK-ch, Xa'xtsa and Sts’ailes traditional lands by land and water with main camps located at Xit’olacw, Skatin and Sts’ailes; independent tent camps will be at Bremner Creek beach and Long Island Bay campsites. After leaving Mt. Currie we will be completely “off the grid”, with no cellular phone service, until reaching the lower part of Harrison Lake. The safety crew has a satellite phone and radio communications to first response agencies. Main Camps Three main camps with vehicle access and ample room for camping are located at Mt. Currie, Skatin and Sts’ailes, for details on amenities and detailed locations refer to the Ground Crew Book. Independent Camps Two independent nights for the paddlers will happen as we move down Harrison Lake; no road access is possible due to forestry construction along the Sts’ailes FSR while we journey through and the camp locations can be described as “rough”. The organizers will arrange for food to be transported, communal cooking equipment, and portable toilets/pit toilets to be available. There is no running water or electrical power at either of the camp locations! All paddlers MUST bring their own camping equipment and personal supplies, and everything needed MUST fit in one backpack or bag! Recommended items are:
Due to the capacity of the support boats, paddler’s bags may need to be transported in your canoe, so please pack only the essentials! Please do not bring your own cook stoves or pots and pans on the independent camping days, everything for cooking meals will be supplied.

Safety Equipment Requirements Mandatory by Transport Canada – No canoes will be allowed to participate without all mandatory equipment on board – A safety officer will be checking each day before launching. Skippers will have a PT Canoe Safety/Daily Checklist to assist safety officer in tracking crew #’s & confirming safety equipment is on board.
Transport Canada Mandatory Paddling Gear
PFD Every paddlecraft is required to have "one Canadian-approved personal flotation device or lifejacket of appropriate size for each person on board." Inflatable PFDs and belt packs are popular with boarders and other paddlers because of their low profile. You must be wearing an inflatable device for it to be legal (an excellent habit to get into with foam-filled flotation devices too).
Sound Signalling Device
Every paddlecraft must have "one sound-signalling appliance that meets the applicable standards set out in the Collision Regulations, or a sound-signalling device." Provided it's pealess, a simple whistle (like the one that comes attached to many PFDs) fulfills this requirement.
Heaving Line
Every paddlecraft is required to have "one buoyant heaving line at least 15m long." A combination throwline/towline is more useful for most craft-to-craft rescues in open water, and for towing tired or seasick paddlers
Bailer or Pump
"One bailer or manual bilge pump or bilge-pumping arrangements." A simple scoop made from a cut-up bleach bottle would fulfill the law, but a proper pump will empty your boat faster.
Flashlight If you're paddling in darkness, fog, or snow, or if your craft is more than 6m long you're required to carry a "watertight flashlight". The larger canoes will need to carry a flashlight (it can be part of your camping kit).
Compass
The requirement for "One magnetic compass" doesn't apply if your boat is 8m or less and you're paddling within sight of seamarks (navigation marks). Some Canoes exceed the 8M length and will need to carry a Compass.
Pulling Together Mandatory Safety Equipment
Spare Paddle Each canoe must carry at least one spare paddle.
First Aid Kit The support boats will have a large first aid kit available, each canoe must also carry a small (Level 1) first aid kit.
Painter
Each canoe must have a 8 Metre (25ft) painter (bow line) securely attached to the front of the canoe.
Skippers’ Code of Conduct
A strong skipper strives to be humble and grateful; they listen with an open mind and open heart at all times. They are leaders who are responsible for the lives of the pullers in their canoes. As a skipper:
I will respect and follow all safety recommendations made by the water and land safety officers.
I will acknowledge my limitations and be open to receiving assistance and guidance as needed.
I will be an active & respectful member of the skipper community by fully participating in all required skipper meetings.
I will respect myself by being physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually prepared to skip.
I will respect other skippers' time and expertise by arriving at skippers meetings on time and
welcoming teachings from seasoned skippers.
I will respect the water, weather, and hazards.
I will take care of my crew by ensuring I choose pullers that are prepared mentally, spiritually, emotionally and spiritually to be on the water.
I will be a role model for Pulling Together Canoe Society vision, mission, and core values on and off
the water.
Expectations at Skippers Meetings
1. These are meetings, not Circles 2. Each Canoe Family will send at least one representative, prepared and punctual 3. The purpose of the meetings are to pass on important and pertinent information 4. All skippers must respect and follow the Skippers Code of Conduct
SKIPPER CHECKLIST SAMPLE
To be filled out each morning and after lunch breaks. A safety representative will confirm information and sign and bring
to Safety Vessel. (M – morning, L – after lunch)
