Skill-related fitness

» This involves the components of physical fitness that relate to enhanced performance in sports events.

» The components commonly include agility, balance, coordination, power, speed and reaction time.

» This will be assessed with performance measures.

AGILITY

» Is a skill-related component of physical fitness that pertains to the ability to rapidly change the position of the entire body in space with speed and accuracy.

» This is common in sports such as football where the player with the ball dodges a defender, or in badminton or tennis, moving around the court quickly to reach the shuttlecock/ball in time.

BALANCE

» Is a skill-related component of physical fitness that pertains to the maintenance of equilibrium while stationary or moving.

»Balance is important in sports such as dance (ballet), gymnastics, ice hockey, figure skating and other sports requiring extreme control.

» HEEL-TO-TOE WALK

COORDINATION

» Is a skill-related component of physical fitness that refers to the ability to use the senses as sight and hearing together with other body parts in performing motor tasks smoothly and accurately. Like eye and hand coordination while catching the ball.

» For example hand-eye coordination in racket sports and the co-ordination to use the opposite arm and leg when sprinting.

POWER

» Is a skill-related component of physical fitness that refers to the ability to move body parts swiftly by applying maximum force of the muscles.

» It is a combination of strength and speed.

» The tennis serve, a sprint start, a basketball dunk, and a baseball pitch all exhibit power.

SPEED

»A skill-related component of physical fitness that refers to the ability to perform a movement within a short period of time.

» For example, a football player out running the defense to receive a pass.

REACTION TIME

» Is a skill-related component of physical fitness that refers to the time elapsed between stimulation and beginning of the reaction to it.

» It is how quickly your brain can respond to a stimulus and initiate a response.

» The most obvious being responding to the gun at the start of a race or a badminton player reacting to a smash shot.
