Session Objectives

At the end of our time together, you will be able to:

• Better understand the difference between “passive” and “active” listening, and the impacts of both.

• Identify techniques for developing and/or enhancing active listening skills.

• Identify strategies for “reframing the question/issue” in order to facilitate effective dialogue and collaboration.

4

Let’s Talk About Listening Skills

5

Listening ActivityGetting Ready (1 minute)• Turn to the person to your right (and introduce yourself if you

haven’t yet met) • Decide who will be the Speaker and who will be the Listener

for the purposes of this exercise.

Activity Instructions• Speakers, will share a peak experience - a positive and

memorable time in your life. You will have 2 minutes• Listeners will listen in silence – they will not engage in

dialogue or asking questions • Switch roles when instructed

6

In Summary• Listening is much more than hearing

• Listen to understand the content of what the other person is saying

• Non-verbal signals you send are important

• Be empathetic and validate feelings

• Know when to simply be silent and not say anything

• Know that you don’t have to have all the answers

• Reframe to shift a concept, idea or feeling from the negative to the positive

Thank You!
