SIDNEY GERBER INVENTORY
Acc. Nos. ·503,584,968
The Sidney Gerber papers deal primarily with Gerber's career as an active civil rights worker, particularly in the area of housing and vocational opportunities through a number of differ-ent organizations: the Washington State Board Against Discrimination (he was Governor Rosellini 1s first political appointment and chaired the State Board from 1957 until his resignation in 1962), the Fair Employment Practices Cozmnittee of which he was treasurer, the Washington State Committee for Human Rights, etc. He also established some organizations to deal with the problem of fair housing such as the Fair Housing Listing Service and Harmony Homes.
The papers date primarily from the midclle fifties until 1965. There is some material. from the 194o•s dealing mostly with his political. activities on behalf of the Democratic Party and its candidates. There is little about his presidency of Anderson and Thompson Ski Company, and most of the papers deal with the time after his retirement. His personal activities are represented in an extensive investment file which indicates stock held and through what stock investment firms he worked; there is also an extensive real estate file concerning mostly properties in the Southwest - California and Arizona.
Because of the size of the subgroup (WSBD) and because of the variety of materials that are found, an explanation of the history and materials found might be of value. Governor Rosellini appointed Sidney Gerber to the Washington State Board Against Discrimination in 1957• (See file of correspondence recommending his appointment.) The Board, until this time, had been strongly inf'luenced by Langl.ie appointees, and was to continue to be so under Gerber's chairman-ship. This was eventually one of the reasons for his resignation in 1962 - the feeling that the conservative members of the Board caused the Board to be ineffectual in fulfilling its responsibU-ities. The records cover the period, 1957 until 1962.
Gerber replaced Mrs. Robert L. Jones. The members of the Board who remained were Alfred Westberg, (replaced by Kenneth A. MacDonald in 1959), Bernard Swerland, Jerome L. Toner, S.J., and Mrs. Lonnie (Jessie) Shields. At the time of his appointment, Glen Mansfield was Executive Secretary. In 1960, he was removed from this office and ma.de Field Expert; Malcolm Higgins was hired to replace him. One Field Investigator is mentioned frequently: Rex Jones.
The files consist of the following series:
Interoffice Correspondence - This has been arranged into two sub-series: a chronological arrangement and a subject arrangement. The two overlap and should be used in conjunction with one another.
General correspondence: Correspondence with other g0vern-mental agencies (e.g. Washington. Governor), individ-uals and organizations, arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent.
Minutes
Complaints ( cases closed): These are like the ~'findings" of investigators, but the names have not been specified. It is possible that there is some duplication in this series and the "findings" series.
Findings of Investigators
Case files: These consist of all types of materials -correspondence, reports, notes, ephemera, documents, etc. - arranged alphabetically and filed by subject.
