While people across the United States were gobbling up their buffalo wings, chips and dip, and other countless snacks just before the Super Bowl kicked off, a group of students from James Madison University’s School of Hospi-tality, Sport and Recreation Management were on a bus headed away from
the Superdome in New Orleans. Their work was complete.
Eleven SHSRM students and two professors traveled to New Orleans Jan. 29-Feb. 4 to work the fan and sponsor events leading into Super Bowl XLVII. They didn’t get to attend the game, but the work was a beefy re-
sume builder and an experience of a lifetime.
The group departed on Jan. 29 for Birmingham, Ala., where they toured the Southeastern Conference offices and listened to SEC Director of Media Re-lations Craig Pinkerton reveal how the conference operates day-to-day. The group then traveled further south, where students worked four events in four days, gaining a variety of experiences pertaining to the management of a
mega-event such as the Super Bowl. The events were:
NFL Experience: Assisted with interactive stations such as autograph stage, punt/pass/kick events, NFL memorabilia dis-
play, and Super Bowl trophy exhibit.
Super Bowl Boulevard: Welcomed tourists into the city’s Riverwalk area set up for fans to experience local culture, food,
and music.

After an internal search within the University, Dr. Michael O’Fallon was recently announced as
the full-time Director of the School of Hospitality, Sport and Recreation Management (SHSRM).
In 2010, Dr. O’Fallon was appointed as the Interim Director of the School. O’Fallon served as an
integral part of the leadership team that helped form the new school as the Hospitality Manage-
ment program transitioned out of the College of Business and Sport and Recreation Management
out of the Department of Kinesiology. In announcing O’Fallon’s hiring, Bud Clarke (Interim
Dean, College of Business) highlighted O’Fallon’s “dynamic leadership” while acting as the
school’s interim director and also noted that the “School of Hospitality, Sport and Recreation

Dan’s responsibilities include sell-
ing a full menu of ticket and hospitality packages (premium
inventory, suites, season tickets, partial plans and group tick-
ets) for the New York Red Bulls (MLS) along with other
miscellaneous special events at Red Bull Arena. He seeks to
meet or exceed established weekly or monthly sales goals.
He manages a generated ticket account base and maintains
computerized records of all season ticket customers and pro-
spects using a CRM system. Dan also participates in game/
event day duties as needed and is involved in staffing ticket
sales tables during outside functions such as luncheons, busi-
ness shows and conventions. Dan, when talking about the
major, says “Courses like Sport Sales and Marketing (SRM
435) and Facilities and Event Management (SRM 436) intro-
duced me to many concepts that I now recognize on a daily
basis. The classes and lesson plans were great, but without
question the number one driver of my success in the major
has to be the professors. Throughout my four years, there
were countless times where their insight during office hours
or constructive criticism on an assignment steered me in the
right direction and ultimately helped get me to where I am.”

NSMH — National Society of Minorities in Hospitality
NSMH has been going through many changes and revamping this semester and we are so excited to see the
progress that has happened thus far! We have been fortunate to gain an entirely new executive board that is dedicat-
ed to our organizations growth and success. Thus far, we have had a Progressive dinner in downtown Harrisonburg
where we went to three different restaurants and had a great time getting to know each other! We also were able to go to the
Crosskeys Vineyard a few weeks ago for a tour of how they produce the wine on site, which was very eye opening for those
interested in the beverage part of the industry. Also, a group of us were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to attend the
National Conference in Orlando, Florida with our advisor Miguel! It was an amazing learning experience and we were able to
network and gain connections with major industry employers!
Another exciting event was a group trip to Charlottesville on Sunday, March 24 where we toured a brewery as well as a tavern
styled back in the 17th Century! We also had a guest speaker from the Four Seasons speak to us on March 28. The guest speak-
er held interviews on campus for future internship and Management in Training opportunities! Upcoming fundraising efforts
include bake sales and cookbook sales which include many of Tassie's delicious recipes, so look out for those!
Our general body meetings are twice a month on Thursday’s at 5 pm in Godwin 341. Look out for our newly updated bulletin
board for upcoming events!
Trip to Napa Valley On Saturday, May 11th, a group of 13 students and faculty will meet in
San Francisco California to begin a week long adventure into the world
of viniculture and viticulture. These future oenologists will visit wineries
and walk the fields to discover the secrets to the soils and vines of the
Napa and Sonoma Valleys. Along the way they will enjoy a cooking
class at Cakebread Cellars and will sit on the mountain overlooking Lake
Hennessey as they engage with Jon-Mark and Colleen Chappellet of
Chappellet Vineyards. Colleen, a College of Business graduate, will dis-
cuss the importance of proper marketing techniques while Jon-Mark will
explain the move toward sustainable agriculture in Napa. After a week
of being immersed in the culture of Napa and Sonoma agriculture, the
group will head to San Francisco for a day of sightseeing before return-
ing home to begin work for the summer.
SLAM — Sport and Leisure Association of Madison
Spring 2013 Page 4
Our student chapter mission is to deliver superior and innovative education, networking opportunities, and experience, to pro-
mote the value of our student members to the professional convention management community. We have been able to accom-
plish that and more over this past year, and are looking forward to the great things to come! This past semester we were able to
attend networking receptions in D.C., visit multiple hospitality establishments, host various guest speakers, as
well as participate in several service and social events such as the OCP Night Out and a vineyard and apple
picking tour. This semester we are most looking forward to our 3rd annual Hospitality and Student Conference,
which is being held on April 7 in Godwin Hall. Please visit our website for more details on this great event:
www.wix.com/jmu2013pcmahsc.
The Sport and Leisure Association of Madison has had a great year. We have experienced steady growth organizationally and
with membership this year. Our main focus this past year has been on networking, and we had several guest speakers such as
Chase Leonard from the Washington Redskins and Andrew Dean from the New York Yankees. SLAM also arranged for mem-
bers to attend the SINC Conference in Washington, D.C. SINC was a great opportunity for the group to network with a lot of
professionals in the field of sports. Additionally, SLAM organized a resume workshop for members to help in obtaining practi-
cums, internships and/or jobs; and also offered a number of opportunities to socialize and network with other SRM students.
SLAM is looking forward to an even better year beginning in the Fall of 2013. If any SRM student would like more infor-mation about SLAM, contact us at jmuslam@gmail.com.
4th Annual Disability Awareness Week
JMU’s fourth annual Disability Aware-
ness Week was held between March 25
and 28. There were a ton of amazing
events and it turned out to be a great suc-
cess. The achievement of a great week
was due in part to faculty like Dr. Joshua
Pate. Dr. Pate described how he did his
part to make it such a spectacular event.
“My primary role in Disability Awareness
Week was organizing the workout with
Kyle Maynard at UREC. We had approxi-
mately 35 students there to work out with
Kyle, and he taught us about his own fit-
ness routine, how to overcome anxiety of going to a gym
for the first time, and how to eliminate our excuses. Af-
ter two hours of working out and talking with him, eve-
ryone was -- to put it lightly -- feeling the burn.” Other
events held that week were a panel discussion sponsored
by Deloitte, two movie nights featuring “The Hammer”
and Ray,” and a keynote address in Wilson Auditorium
by Kyle Maynard. Kyle Maynard is a speaker, author,
and ESPY Award-winning mixed martial arts athlete,
known for achieving all this despite being a congenital
amputee. He is pictured to the right and above speaking
and doing exercises with JMU students.

Prowess 2012 Awards Ceremony Externship Program
Once again, as it already became tradition, on December 3, 2012 the 75 students enrolled in the HM Prowess 212 class met at
the Montpellier Room, located in the East Campus Dining Hall, to be awarded a certificate in their Externship with Aramark this
semester. The session started with a lecture by Dr. Reg Foucar-Szocki on “Restaurant Etiquette” followed by an enticing and
detailed description of the menu by the JMU campus Executive Chef, Brandon Rudisill. The students, our School Director, Dr.
Michael O'Fallon, and other faculty members were acknowledged and commended for their participation in the program at this
fine dining experience. The HM Prowess 212 course, along with the Aramark
strategic partnership with the school, has allowed students to experience the food
industry by combining a hands on experience in the various dining locations on
campus as well as participation in a lecture based in-classroom curriculum. The
HM Prowess 212 course has allowed students, at a sophomore level, to experi-
ence the food industry by gaining hands on experience and classroom curriculum.
By learning certifications such as ServSafe and TIPs, sophomores can also better
understand and apply food safety, sanitation and food preparation to better pre-
pare themselves for internships and careers upon graduation.
The menu served at dinner, courtesy of JMU Special Events Catering, was the
following:
1st Course: Ricotta gnocchi with butternut squash cream, crispy fennel and bacon
-chili oil
2nd Course: Braised beef short ribs with sweet potato-apple has, roasted cauli-
flower and apple cider gastrique
3rd Course: Hot chocolate Mousse with coconut creameaux cayenne marshmal-
low, chocolate sauce and mango foam
Dr. Reginald Foucar-Szocki and Ms. Ellen Callahan, the Teaching Assistant for
ARAMARK Dining Services, completed the session by awarding the Certificates
of Completion to all students and gave additional awards to those who did not
miss a single shift. Special congratulations to those awarded with Perfect Attend-
ance are as follows:

Hospitality Management Trip to Las Vegas
Spring 2013 Page 7
Tassie Pippert’s Entertainment Management class took an amazing trip to Las Vegas.
Kelly McGraw, a Hospitality and Tourism Management Major, reflects on her most
memorable aspects of the trip:
Some of my favorite experiences included: 1. Getting to tour the Cosmopolitan with
two guest experience managers. We had the opportunity to have an in depth view of
the property and even got to see a penthouse and bungalow. The two managers fin-
ished the tour by taking us to the hotels buf-
fet, "The Wicked Spoon.” While at lunch,
we got to items such as duck ravioli, angry
mac and cheese, braised short rib, and molten
chocolate cake. It was delicious. 2. Another
fun experience was going to Siegfried and
Roy's Wildlife and Dolphin Habitat. Kate
Willner and I had to opportunity to see a ton
of dolphins up close along with lions and tigers. It was an awesome experience. 3. One
of the most awesome things we got to do in Vegas was experience nightlife. My two
favorite places that we got to go to were Marquee and Pure. Luckily, our group met a
club promoter who gave us free entrance, drinks, and VIP access to the clubs we went to so we always had a great time. We
even got to meet high rollers at PURE and were invited to join their group at a rooftop table for some amazing VIP and bottle
service. It was truly a once in a lifetime night.
A Super Experience Celebrity Beach Bowl: Welcomed and credentialed VIP guests for a flag football game among NFL greats and Hollywood’s
brightest stars.
NFL Game Day Fan Plaza: Assisted guests at the fan plaza outside the Superdome doors, which included interactive games,
food, and entertainment.
Students said the experiential learning trip taught them (1) customer service skills, (2) to be flexible with regard to work schedules, and (3) to always have a backup plan. The work experiences often placed students into a setting where they were forced to interact with fans and serve as representatives of both New Orleans and the Super Bowl. The students were further challenged by oftentimes being forced to change plans and improvise when job assignments lacked detail or were com-
pleted early.
The hard work, however, paid off in many cases, as students were rewarded for their professionalism following their work at the Celebrity Beach Bowl. The event sponsor, DirecTV, treated students to a free concert by Pitbull and VIP access to
Justin Timberlake’s first concert in five years.
Super Bowl Sunday presented perhaps the biggest learning opportunity of the trip. A credentialing problem held hundreds of volunteers in the registration facility and delayed the start of the morning by more than two hours. The JMU students, however, voiced the importance of maintaining a positive attitude and responded well, despite being shifted to a different job assignment. While working the NFL Game Day Fan Plaza just outside the Superdome doors, the students interacted with fans through games, photo opportunities, and assisting with questions. By the time the national anthem was being sung, JMU’s Super Bowl
group was on a bus headed back to volunteer parking, wrapping up four full days of resume-building experience.
The group arrived back at its hotel in time for Beyoncé's halftime performance, and everyone watched the second half in the ho-
tel lobby, exhausted from the week’s work.
One student summed up the trip by saying, “After working the events this week, it’s almost like the actual Super Bowl game was an after-thought.” With that mentality, it became evident that the trip prepared
the students to actually work in sport.

Spring 2013 Theme Dinners
Spring 2013
What exactly is a theme dinner? Students majoring in Hospitality Management have the privilege of putting on an event for friends and family to show off all of the skills they have acquired through their four years at JMU. Each team of six students began planning for their theme dinner in January 2012. They became managers the day of the event and got to experience and execute the event first hand. These events serve 100-200 guests with a several thousand dollar budget and employ a staff of 40-50 HTM underclassmen and other volun-teers. During the Fall semester there were three theme dinners: Wizard of Oz, Triple Crown and Harvest Festival.

Eta Sigma Delta Initiation Ceremony
Eta Sigma Delta (ESD) is an international hospitality honors society that recognizes the top 10%-15% of their class. This invita-
tion only society, offers students a chance to network with their fellow peers, gain advantages regarding internship opportunities
and have an elevated knowledge of the industry. ESD was founded in 1978 at the University of New Hampshire’s Whittemore
School of Business and Economics when students recognized the need to honor students in the hospitality and tourism depart-
ments. Today there are more than 90 active chapters across the globe and JMU is proud to be one of them.
Three HTM Seniors - Kara Widerman, Kate Willner, and Kelly McGraw - reestablished a chapter of ESD this Spring and in-
ducted their first class on February 27, 2013. There were 43 active members initiated, overseen by Reg Foucar-Szocki and Mi-
chael O’Fallon. In the coming weeks, tri-presidents, Kara, Kate and Kelly, will be choosing the future leaders for the JMU
chapter that will carry the organization long into the future. The hopes for chapter members are to become the HM department’s
group of outstanding students that will represent the School both on campus and off. They will participate in programs to help
recruit prospective students, cater Le Gourmet in Washington, D.C., and become HM spokespeople. JMU’s chapter of Eta Sig-
ma Delta is just beginning, but the future holds great things for this student run organization. Members have a say in what activ-
ities they will engage in and there are no limits on what this new organization can achieve. Well done ESD!

From Our Hyatt Campus Ambassador Hyatt Hotels recently visited James Madison University to recruit for their 2013 undergraduate summer internships and their
Corporate Management in Training (CMT) program for recent college graduates. Kara Widerman, JMU’s Hyatt Campus Am-
bassador, promoted Hyatt beginning two weeks prior to Ronisha Goodwin, Hyatt recruiter
for JMU, visiting this past February and had the largest turn out Ronisha had ever seen of
90+ students. Ronisha finished her college tour in late March and has extended offers to
select JMU students. Kara Widerman will be headed to Austin Texas working as the
Rooms Department CMT and select undergraduate students will be working at the Hyatt
Regency Chesapeake Bay this summer.
Hyatt has been a long partner of JMU and fostered great relationships with the faculty and
staff. Over the past three years, Hyatt has selected multiple students every year to partici-
pate in internships throughout the summer, and build their careers within the company. As
JMU proceeds with their first class of HM students, Hyatt will continue to build their relation-
ship with the Hospitality Department and recruit among our college graduates.

Widerman distributed during finals as a
way to promote Hyatt
Thank You Hospitality Advisory Board On February 20, 2013, the Spring meeting of the Hospitality Advisory Board met on campus. The meeting was called to order
by the HM Advisory Board President and first hospitality class alum Rick Casey (President, Capitol Representation, Inc.). In
attendance were Laura Arth (President, Arth Capital Consulting), David Grimm(JMU Director of Development, College of Arts
and Letters), Peter Lovelace (Clubhouse Manager, Bethesda Country Club), Robyn Graff (Conference Services Manager, Hyatt
Regency Washington), Jim Gratton (General Manager at Marriott International), Carol Simon (General Manager, Stonewall
Jackson Hotel), Luke O’Boyle (General Manager, Chevy Chase Club), Edward Gutauskas (Regional Operations Director, ARA-
MARK Campus Services), Thomas Jackson (President, Jackson Hotel Management), Michelle Moulden (JMU Senior student),
Allyn Gutauskas (Human Resource Manager, Farmington Country Club), Nicholas DiMeglio (VP & General Manager, The Ritz
-Carlton Aspen Highlands), Ron Hallagan (President, Hallagan Consulting, LLC). This productive meeting was one opportunity
not only for listening to their very valuable industry advice, but also for Dr. O’Fallon to provide a SHSRM Program update and
his aspirational statement for the future of SHSRM.

2013 Spring Career Fair
Another Outstanding Le Gourmet Night
On November 10, 2012, JMU Hospitality Management had their 10th Annual Le Gourmet
event, this year incorporating JMU's purple and gold school colors, the chosen theme was
“Purple Rain”! The event paid homage to the 1980s. One of the highlights of this year’s
event was the creation of the Susan J. Reid $25,000 scholarship. Susan is the wife of Robert
Reid, former Dean of the JMU Business College and past Hospitality and Tourism Manage-
ment director. Thank you so much to our key Purple Rain Sponsors such as the U.S. Cham-
ber of Commerce, RSVP catering, Daly Foundation, AmSan, Royal Cup Coffee, Sysco of
Harrisonburg, Serta and so many others auction contributors that made this event another
hospitality program philanthropically success story. A special thanks to all the alumni, stu-
dents, staff and faculty involved in the planning, preparation, service and participation on
this event!
For your agendas, 2013 Le Gourmet will be held in D.C. on Saturday October 26 with a “Casino Night” Theme. The web-site of this new event http://www.jmulegourmet.com/ should be updated soon!
Following the success and demand for space from previous careers fairs, the 2013 Spring Career, Internship and Service Fair
was expanded to a two day event on February 19 and 20, 2013 in the Ballroom of the Festival Conference and Student Center.
A number of Hospitality Management recruiters attended including day one participants: ARAMARK/JMU Dining, F&G
Hospitality, Marriott International and The Ritz-Carlton, The Boar's Head Inn and Uncle Julio's Corporation. Organizations
that registered for day two of the fair were: Avalon Bay Communities, Inc., Busch Gardens and Water Country USA, Crestline
Hotels & Resorts, Modus Hotels, Omni Shoreham Hotel and Panera Bread. In total, the two day fair attracted over 150 em-
ployers from the Mid-Atlantic region, serving over 1,600 students who attended. Over 200 students were able to take part in
the LinkedIn photo booth that was available for free, so students could upload a more professional photo to their account.
Holding the fair over two days allowed all of the employers to be placed in the ballroom for the first time since Fall 2009.
This increased the traffic for all employers and allowed student to easily navigate through the event. Career and Academic
Planning, which organizes the fair, also hosted a reception the evening for employer representatives and JMU faculty to con-
nect and discuss future partnerships. The feedback received from both the employers and students attending the fair was very
positive towards the change in the format. Plans for the 2013 Fall Career Fair call for another two-day event taking place on
September 30 and October 1 in the Festival Ballroom from 12:00-4:00 pm. Employer registration for the Fall Career Fair will
open in June. If you have additional questions or comments, please contact Chris Campbell, Career and Academic Planning,
at 568-2928, or campbecm@jmu.edu.

Congratulations Dr. Ben Carr
President Alger visited the SHSRM on November 15 to get answers to his question: “Why does
Madison matter to you?”
As you may have heard, President Jonathan Alger for the last eight months has been conducting a listening tour to learn as much as possible about James Madi-son University—its strengths and its challenges. One goal of the listening tour is to get input from as many members of the Madison community as possible. That includes the faculty and staff of James Madison University, as well as students, alumni, parents and donors. The president has visited several academic units in the last few weeks and last November 15 he met with the Director and all faculty. Also, you are invited to share your ideas, use the "Submit your answer" button to offer your ideas on why Madison matters. The president will continue his visits next fall and spring semesters, so stop back at the “Why Madison?” webpage often for an update and find President’s Journal reflections at www.jmu.edu/whymadison.
In Memorium
Steve Flack, a faculty member in the School of Hospitality, Sport & Rec-reation Management from 2010 to 2012, passed away on April 4. Steve was returning from umpiring a Strasburg High School baseball game when he was killed in an automobile accident near New Market. SHSRM Direc-tor Michael O’Fallon commented “Steve was an integral part of our facul-ty in the new school having served as an instructor for the first two years of the program. He touched the lives of so many of our students and members of the JMU community and will be sorely missed.” Steve had extensive coaching experience at various levels and sports. He served as the Head Baseball Coach and Pitching Coach for the Staunton Braves in the Valley League; Head Coach at Chowan University; Assistant Baseball Coach and Pitching Coach at Eastern Mennonite University; Assis-
tant Varsity Basketball Coach at Spotswood High School; and as
Head Coach and Assistant Coach at other various high schools. Steve was a special person and was loved by all JMU students, faculty and staff. He was the former owner of Downtown 56, a restaurant that he opened in 2007 with his wife Cookie. Steve is survived by his wife Cookie. The faculty and staff in the School of Hospi-tality, Sport and Recreation Management want to express our heartfelt condolences to Cookie. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Chowan University Baseball Program, Attn: Office of Development, One University Place, Murfreesboro, NC 27855.
This past year, the School of Hospitality, Sport and Recreation Management celebrated many accomplishments. One notable accomplishment was granting tenure to Dr. Ben Carr. Dr. Ben Carr was promoted from assistant to associate professor with tenure! This is a tremendous honor for faculty across the na-tion. Dr. Ben Carr has taught both graduate and undergraduate courses includ-ing Ethics in Sport and Recreation, Philosophy of Sport and Recreation, as well as Sport and Recreation Law.
