Summary the most significant work of the nominee:
Dr. Atul Goel has made notable and original contributions to challenging area of drug development and applied
chemistry. His research group has not only discovered orally active fracture healing agents for improving bone
health (International patent granted and ready for licensing), but also conceptually designed and synthesized
fluorescent dyes for their applications as diagnostic tools in Cell biology and for developing energy saving
Organic Light Emitting Devices (High impact publications). Very recently, they have discovered and reported
„First‟ dual colorimetric-ratiometric fluorescent probe for selective and direct visualization of Labile Iron (III) pools
in multicellular organaisms (Soil nematode C. elegans) (Goel et al. Chem. Commun. 2015, 51, 5001). These
results have opened new avenues for detecting iron imbalance in blood samples.

12. (a) Significant contributions to science and/ or technology development by the nominee based on the work done in India during most part of last 5 years. Specific reference is to be made to research papers: OBJECTIVES OF DR. ATUL GOEL’S RESEARCH WORK
Dr. Goel has made notable contributions in the area of bioorganic and applied sciences. His research objective is
to develop new affordable technologies for the sake of mankind by developing new drugs for the diseases of
national relevance and/or developing new fluorescent diagnostic tools for bioimaging and electroluminescent
energy saving devices such as Light Emitting Devices (LEDs).
Dr. Goel‟s research group is mainly focused on two major topics of chemical sciences as mentioned below:
(i) Development of new affordable drugs for osteoporosis and for improving bone health (CSIR-CDRI-1500: Pteroheal - Orally active fracture healing agent)
During drug development program on Reproductive health including management of osteoporosis, Dr. Goel‟s
research group in CSIR-CDRI has identified a series of new pterocarpans, which showed therapeutic potential in
osteoporosis by improving bone health (Goel et al.: Substituted benzofurochromenes and related compounds for
the prevention and treatment of bone related disorders: US Granted US-8686028 dated 01-04-2014,
PCT/IN2009/000285 dated 14-05-09). Several new leads from his research group have been identified as potent
osteogenic (bone forming) agents and one of the designed and synthesized pterocarpans CDRI-1500
(Pteroheal) showed significant stimulation of callus formation and exhibited increased fracture healing at only
1.0 mg/kg/day dose in adult rats. New bone formation at the fracture site is increased by ~40% in rats treated
with S-007-1500 compared to vehicle treated rats.

The technology is ready for licensing to pharma industry. Some of his research papers on the related topic have
been published in high impact international journals (Goel et al. Org. Biomol. Chem. 2012, 10, 9583 (cover
page); Tyagi et al. Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology 2010, 325, 101-109; Pandey et al. Menopause, 2010,
17, 602-610; Bhargavan et al. J. Nutritional Biochemistry, 2012, 23, 27-38; Malik et al. Osteoporosis
International, 2012, 23, 1151-1161).
(ii) Development of New Organic Fluorescent diagnostic tools for Bioimaging and Cutting-edge LED based display technology
They have also developed New Organic Fluorescent Dyes with variety of absorption and emission wavelength
for biological (as diagnostic tool or bioprobes) and Energy-saving electroluminescent devices (OLEDs)
applications.
Fluorenes and Quateraryls as Stable Blue Light Emitters for New Display Technology:
Innovatively, they have demonstrated for the first time a novel „concept‟ of inhibiting “Green Emission Defect” in
fluorene-based OLEDs by transforming “green” fluorenone molecules to “blue” fluorenone compounds by

appropriately swapping of donor-acceptor and chromophoric groups onto widely used fluorene/fluorenone -
conjugated system (Goel et al. PCT patent WO/2009/122445 dated 08.10.2009; PCT/IN2009/000215 dated
31.03.09). The performance of a blue fluorene was investigated by fabricating a multilayer OLED with a
configuration of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/TPD (30nm)/D/A-fluorene (60nm)/BCP (8nm)/ LiF(0.5nm)/Al (160 nm), which
revealed stable bright blue emission with a low turn on voltage of 3.5V and a brightness of 573 Cd/m2 with good
chemical, thermal and electrochemical stability (Goel et al. Organic Letters, 2009, 6, 1289,).
A Novel Concept for Inhibiting ‘Green Emission Defect’
in Fluorene-based OLEDs (Goel et al. Organic Letters, 2008, 10, 2553; Highlighted in Synfacts, 2008, 9, 935).

Non-aggregating Bipolar Benzo[f]quinolines for Multicolor Organic Electronic Displays:
Dr. Goel recently demonstrated novel donor-acceptor partially hydrogenated benzo[f]quinolines as non-aggregating multicolor light emitters for flat panel displays (Goel et al. J. Mater. Chem. 2012, 22,14880). Among the four fabricated blue-green-yellow-red devices, blue organic light emitting devices (Blue Fluorescent Panels) were successfully prepared by IIT-Kanpur collaborator Dr. RS Anand for technology commercialization. International Korean patent (No. 1006060, dated 09.05.2012) has been granted to CSIR-CDRI and it is ready for technology licensing.

Leishmania donovani parasite for live and fixed cell imaging applications in chemical and molecular biology
(Goel et al. Patent Appl. No. 807DEL2013 dated 19/03/2013; Goel et al. Organic Letters, 2014, 16, 756-759).

Dr. Atul Goel has made notable and original contributions to challenging area of medicinal and material
chemistry. His research group has not only discovered orally active fracture healing agents CDRI-1500
(US patent granted: Ready for licensing) for improving bone health, but also conceptually designed and
synthesized fluorescent dyes for their applications in cutting-edge OLED technology and Cell Imaging
applications for understanding the biological pathways (Chem Commun., 2015, 51, 5001).
(c) Impact of the contributions in the field concerned, basic or applied:
Osteoporosis is leading health care issue worldwide, a disease that increases risk of fracture, which arises due
to an imbalance between formation of osteoblasts (Bone forming cells) and osteoclasts (Bone resorptive cell).
Current drug scenario showed no orally active anabolic agents. The recombinant human PTH (teriparatide) is the
only FDA approved anabolic agent currently available in the U.S. and Europe. The contribution made by Dr.
Goel‟s research team in identifying new orally active potent fracture healing compound CSIR-CDRI S007-1500
(Pteroheal) is a significant advancement in the area of bone health research and holds high therapeutic potential
for drug development (Goel et al.: Substituted benzofurochromenes and related compounds for the prevention
and treatment of bone related disorders: International Patent Appl. No. WO/2010/052734 dated 14.05.2010,
PCT/IN2009/000285 dated 14-05-09; US Granted US-8686028 dated 01-04-2014).
Furthermore his research contributions in developing new fluorescent dyes for their potential use in cutting edge
Diode-based Display Technology have been highly appreciated by scientific community as evident from
numerous citations received for the publications evolved from his research work. Innovatively, Goel et al. have
demonstrated for the first time a novel „concept‟ of inhibiting “Green Emission Defect” in fluorene-based OLEDs
by transforming “green” fluorenone molecules to “blue” fluorenone compounds by appropriately swapping of
donor-acceptor and chromophoric groups onto widely used fluorene/fluorenone -conjugated system (Goel et al.
PCT patent WO/2009/122445 dated 08.10.2009; PCT/IN2009/000215 dated 31.03.09). These findings have
opened new vistas in the field of organic electronics. They have shown that emission color can be effectively
controlled from „blue to green to yellow to red‟ by modulating the aromatic -characteristic not only in solution
(photoluminescence) but also in solid electroluminescent devices (Goel et al. J. Mater. Chem. 2012, 22,14880).
His team successfully prepared (In collaboration with IIT Electrical Engineer Dr. RS Anand at Kanpur) Yellow
Fluorescent „Name Plates‟ for exploring their potential for technology development. Recently they have designed
and synthesized Donor-Acceptor Fluoranthene Dye FLUN-550 for Selective Fluorescence Staining of
cytoplasmic lipid droplets of 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes as well as for selective staining of neutral lipid droplets of
Leishmania donovani parasite and soil nematode C. elegans for live and fixed cell imaging applications in
chemical and molecular biology (Goel et al. Patent Appl. No. 807DEL2013 dated 19/03/2013; Goel et al.
Organic Letters, 2014, 16, 756-759).

for selective and direct visualization of Labile Iron (III) pools in multicellular oragnaisms (Soil nematode C.
elegans) (Goel et al. Chem. Commun. 2015, 51, 5001). This probe has opened new avenues for enhancing our
understanding on the crucial role of iron-catalyzed generation of reactive oxygen species, which is associated
with many diseases like cancer, diabetes and neuro-degenerative disorders. On the basis of his outstanding
contributions in the area of bioorganic and applied chemical sciences, his research work received high citations,
which reflect the significance of his research findings and he has received many prestigious awards and
honours.
