Shams 1 Concentrated Solar Power Plant Three Years of O&M Experience

5th September 2013 Project commercial operation date (PCOD). On this date the project achieved

Commercial operation and has been generating revenues since then.

Background – Important Dates

31st January 2014 Shams was handed over the plant from the EPC contractor after the latter achieved

the conditions for practical Completion and the Practical Completion Certificate (PCC) was signed.

2016 was the third commercial operational year for the plant.

Climate Challenges

Climate Challenges … continued

High Dust Concentration • Dust results in relatively low DNI. • Dust increases the mirror soiling

rate, decreasing the average reflectivity of the mirrors quicker than in other locations

High Wind Speeds • The vast Rub’ Al Khali desert is a

major source of wind. • Summer months are the windiest

carrying a lot of dust and causing many disturbances in operation

High Temperature • Efficiency of the water/steam

cycle. • Steam condenser design. • Higher parasitic consumption.

Water Scarcity • The main source of water is

desalination, which means high cost of water.

• No rivers, lakes near the plant affecting condenser design.

Main Operation Modes • Normal operation Solar + Fuel

• Solar only operation • Fuel only operation Firm output mode as requested by PPA
