What is a cave?

• What is black on the inside, green or rocky on the outside, has chimneys, and pits, huge rooms and tiny passages, weird shapes and running water and have been around for millions of years? CAVES of course!

• Caves are formed by water erosion, chemical processes or even from the lava of a volcano.

• Caves can even be made of ice!

Where are caves?• Caves can be under water, in

the forest, and in a hill.• Carlsbad Caverns National

Park in New Mexico has many formations that take all kinds of fantastic shapes.

• Caves can be found along sea coasts around the world.

• Volcanic activity creates lava tubes which are the most common 'primary' caves.

• Caves that occur in ice and under glaciers and that are formed by melting are called glacier caves.

Fun Facts about Caves

• A cave is a hole where you would find bats, bugs, snakes, and bears.

• Very few plants can grow in a cave because of the lack of light.

• Fungi, algae, and even some simple mosses grow in caves.

• Cavemen people used caves for shelter and they even decorated them with works of art.
