Northwest China.• Area: 79,500 sq mi• Population (2010): 37,327,378• Junxiao visited Shaanxi in May

2013.

Shaanxi• Why there are two "a"s?• China has two provinces with similar romanized names:• 陕西 shăn xi• 山西 shān xi

• When tone marks are omitted, they are indistinguishable.• Chinese government adopted "Shaanxi" for 陕西 .

Xi'an 西安• Xi'an is the capital and largest city in Shaanxi province.• Xi'an is one of the oldest cities in China.• Xi'an was known as Chang'an before the Ming dynasty (1368).• Quote our tour guide:• Come to Xi'an to see 1000+ years of history;

Terracotta Army 兵马俑• The Terracotta Army is a collection of

terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang.• Buried: 210-209 BC• Discovered: 1974• Count:• more than 8,000 soldiers• 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150

cavalry horses• other non-military figures

Qin Shi Huang's tomb• Qin Shi Huang (260-210 BC) is

the first emperor of China.• Terracotta Army is a form of

funerary art buried with the emperor to protect the emperor in his afterlife.

• Qin Shi Huang's tomb remains unopened due to concerns about preservation of its contents.

Warrior figures• The terracotta figures are life-sized.• They vary in height, uniform, and

hairstyle in accordance with rank.• The figures were originally painted

with bright pigments, but the color coating had flaked off.• Most figures originally held real

weapons, but they were looted shortly after.

Huaqing Hot Springs• Huaqing was the palace of Tang

emperors Taizong (626-649) and Xuanzong (712-756).• The site also served as the

location of several earlier palaces in Zhou, Qin, and Han dynasties.
