To be alive is to look up at the stars on a dark night and to feel the beyond-words awe of space in its vastness. To be alive is to look down from a mountaintop on a bright, clear day and to feel the wonder that can only be expressed in “oh” or “wow” or maybe “hallelujah.” To be alive is to look out from the beach toward the horizon at sunrise or sunset and to savor the joy of it all in pregnant, saturated silence. To be alive is to gaze in delight at a single bird, tree, leaf, or friend, and to feel that they whisper of a creator or source we all share. Brian D. McLaren, We Make the Road by Walking, 21
st c.
Dear Friends,
McLaren’s definition of being alive reflects how many of us
feel after a summer spent living in the great creation that is
Maine and traveling in the great creation that is, well,
beyond Maine! I particularly like the words about “gazing in
delight at…a friend”! Collectively, our congregation of
family and friends has crisscrossed a great part of the world
during the past few months, and we are not the same
people we were at our Celebration Sunday last June. We
have been places. We have done things. We have read
books and met new people. We have eaten new foods
and seen great sights. And now? Now it’s time to come
home to church, to re-gather, to re-connect, and to share
what each of us has learned and the person each of us has
become. You and what you have done and where you
have been are important to the very fabric—the colors, the
textures, the stitches--of our identity. You are part of how we
are woven together by and in “a creator or source we all
share”. Our CUF fabric is reflected here in the first lines of
one of my favorite hymns.
Restless Weaver, ever spinning threads of justice and shalom;
Dreaming patterns of creation where all creatures find a home;
Gathering up life’s varied fibers—every texture, every hue:
Grant us your creative vision. With us weave your world anew.
Let us gather the threads of the CUF tapestry and begin to
weave a new chapter in the life of our church. Let us gather
to greet old friends and make new friends. Your church
family is ready to “gaze in delight” that you are here, that
your journey has brought you to worship with us.
See you in church,
Lorna The Reverend Lornagrace Grenfell

Around CUF . . . Olivia Knott was a flower girl in a wedding this summer!... Bob Gallant celebrated his 73rd birthday at Angler’s with 18 members of the Over the Hill Gang!... Mark Baker, Darren Morgan, Steve Burnham and Dave Cox had a great Cape Cod vacation!... Sandy Feher, Lara Campbell and Trang Triff worshiped here at CUF the Sunday after their 25th OHS reunion!... Ed Brazee and Connie Carter hosted the Brazee Family Reunion out at Long Pond!... Ted and Rose Marie Curtis and Lara, Jim and James Campbell had a great trip to PEI!... Barbara and Dot Turner went to the Outer Banks for a family reunion and just missed the hurricane!... Watch out! Nora Dobbs was seen on her front lawn on Main Street using a ‘speed gun’ with an officer standing by giving her instructions!... Janet Bilyk had a great car/train trip around New England!... Our congregation thanks all the talented worship artists who played and sang and danced in worship this summer: Justin Zang, Carolyn Artesani, Laura Artesani, Emily Walton, Nicholas Southwick, Fred Heath, Susan Heath, August Eaton, Rachel Dobbs, Rory Sullivan, Ainsley Morrison, Molly Webster, Paige Bacon, Jason Priest and Catharine Cloutier!
Judy Kuhns-Hastings, Sarah Marx and Ginny Gallant attended the Down East Spiritual Life Conference in Castine led by John Philip Newell, reknowned minister, poet, peacemaker and scholar. Newell is internationally
acclaimed for his work in the field of Celtic spirituality. Based in Edinburgh, Scotland, Newell teaches and preaches internationally on themes related to the sacredness of the earth and the oneness of the human soul and is one of the most prominent teachers of spirituality in the English-speaking world. Tricia Griffith participated with friends in Boston’s Dirty Girl Mud Run, a 5Kmud obstacle course for women only. They crawled through mud, climbed cargo nets, slid into mud pits, and climbed over obstacles. It was all about embracing life's messes, celebrating life’s obstacles, and helping our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends to do the same in support of Bright Pink, a charity organization that raises awareness about breast and ovarian cancer.

Young Voices
We are all sad to see the Twitchell-
Morrison family move from Orono and
wish them all the best in their new home
in Southern Maine. After considerable
thought about the best way to continue
having music an integral part of our
children and youth's religious education
experience, the Deacons have decided to
incorporate the music into the weekly
Sunday school/YAWP program. This way
the music will be more of an integral part
of the Sunday experience for our children
and youth. The religious education staff
and teachers will work with the Young
Voices every Sunday as part of the
religious education curriculum. Stay
tuned for some lovely music coming from
our young people!
News from Religious News from Religious News from Religious News from Religious
Education: Welcome to the Education: Welcome to the Education: Welcome to the Education: Welcome to the
“Jesus year!”“Jesus year!”“Jesus year!”“Jesus year!” This year at the Church of Universal Fellowship,
our elementary youth curriculum will focus in on
Jesus of Nazareth. We will explore Jesus' Jewish
identity and learn about the Jewish holidays of
Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot. We will
retell many of the stories Jesus told and the stories
told about him. We will explore the values Jesus
lived and why these values matter to people here in
our congregation. We will attempt to learn all we
can about life in first century Palestine and we will
wonder together about all we can't ever know! We
are looking forward to involving the adults in our
conversations, so be ready for some interesting
questions from the young people!
Please also consider volunteering in the classroom.
Assistant teachers are only a one week
commitment (no preparation needed at all).
Regular teachers teach for a month at a time and
they do need to do some prep work. They also
need to have been attending the CUF for at least 6
months. If you think you might be interested in
helping out in either of these ways, please contact
Sarah Marx at 866-8615 or sarahmarx@yahoo.com
There will be a teacher training for all interested
teachers, parents and community members right
after church on September 28th. It will run from
12-2pm and lunch and child care will be provided.
Everyone is welcome to attend! Please RSVP to
Sarah via email sarahmarx@yahoo.com or phone
866-8615 so that we can plan the appropriate
amount of food.
ITEMS and SKILLS needed: If you wouldn’t mind collecting the following
items, we could use them for our elementary
programs. We will leave a box in the Gathering
Place entry hall where you can leave the items.

smaller box size are both needed, but especially the

Heart Rhythm Meditation Heart Rhythm Meditation coordinates breath and heartbeat and is a refinement of a form of meditation that has
been practiced for millennia. Learning Heart Rhythm Meditation is like learning to play an instrument--the
instrument is you. Under the leadership of Steve Hodgdon, this new group meets to learn meditation
practices together that can be used on one’s own throughout the week. Heart Rhythm Meditation (HRM)
coordinates one’s internal rhythms, producing coherence across heartbeat, breath and brainwaves. This
coherence strengthens the connection between mind and heart, so that our emotions become more
understandable and our choices more conscious. HRM benefits cardiac health and increases circulation.
Internal coherence reduces anxiety and fear and increases one’s influence and capacity. Ultimately, HRM can
bring a state of radiant peace, and we have a greater effect on our surroundings than our surroundings have on
us. We begin on Tues., Sept. 16. For more information please contact Steve at shodgdon@rsu26.org.

As many of you know, the Morrison/Twitchell family is moving back to southern Maine.
Tiffany Twitchell has taken a new job in York, Maine and David Morrison has been
working for a consulting firm in Gorham for most of the past year. Their departure
saddens our church community, and we will be saying a formal farewell in worship on
Sunday, September 14.Sunday, September 14.Sunday, September 14.Sunday, September 14.
...from the Commissioned Minister
Welcome to the month of September and the promise of cooler weather. Hope you had a memorable summer
and enjoyed the warmer weather. At the Veterans Home, we have been busy on the unit during the summer
months despite my being “out of commission” for a good part of it. Special thanks to everyone for their
thoughtfulness during this time. In June we celebrated Father's Day as each one named their dad and we
remembered each one in prayer. It was a joyful time for us to learn the names of our fathers and something
about our dads. Afterward we celebrated with cheese and crackers. It's a joy to enter the unit and see a small
group “greeting” the visitors as they enter the unit. Yes, these are our “Greeters.” This summer I was awarded
a certificate and ten-year pin for working at MVH for ten years. WOW! I can't believe it's been ten years
(going on eleven years this December) that I've been at the Home...I love it! I shared the certificate and pin
with the folks on the Unit...needless to say, they loved it and felt a part of the celebration.
I continue to do ministry along with the assigned activities, on the Unit. During the summer I participated in
my first burial service of a Jew, a resident of the Vets Home with whom I had a special relationship. Rabbi
Lerner of Congregational Bethel El graciously visited him at my request before he made his transition. It is
always sad when we lose someone … Also, this summer, I was invited to lead worship at the Montville Baptist
Church. The church was “born” in the 1800s. What a privilege to serve this small congregation in a building
that is over one-hundred years old! One can only imagine how it felt to worship there in the earlier days, in a
building heated by a small wood stove with an out-house located behind the building. So many souls
worshiped in that same building before us. The congregation invited me back to lead the beginning of this
month. Yours is not the less noble because no drum beats before you when you go out into your daily battlefields, and
no crowds shout about your coming when you return from your daily victory or defeat. -- Robert Louis
Stevenson (1850-1894) Scottish Novelist
With love, prayers and blessings, Anne Borreggine

NEWS FROM OUR CARETAKER………… It’s been busy over the summer with the upkeep of
our beautiful church. I hope you have noticed some
of the work that has been done, and perhaps would
like to know what has happened through the
summer here at CUF.
• The main stairway that had become very rusted
was one of the biggest projects. All the treads
were peeled off, the rust was tended to and the
metal of the stairs was primed and painted. The
treads have been put back on and the walls in
the stairway received some touch up painting.
• The narthex has had much attention including
staining the wood around the stairs, painting
the railings, added wood tops to the railing up
rights, and a good steam cleaning of the carpet.
The concrete steps at the entrance of the
narthex have also been patched and painted.
• The Gathering Place entrance doors have been
repaired and the entry hallway has been
repainted along with the bulletin boards. Since
the leak has been fixed the damaged ceiling
tiles in the main entrance were replaced as well.
• The attic, closets, and outside shed have been
cleaned.
Many other repairs are still on going. Please let me
know if there is anything that needs my attention.
Thanks to the hard work of Randy Adkins the
church grounds have been landscaped and seeded.
Randy also fixed the railing on the porch and has
been very helpful to me through the summer.
Thank you very much, Randy, and everyone else
for any and all assistance. These projects would be
much more difficult to get done if it weren’t for a
congregation that is always helping keep things
neat and clean.

and we would love some baked goods for the
ever so popular CUF Sunday Coffee Hour.
Anything is welcome...maybe put those
overgrown zucchini to good use and whip up a
batch of zucchini bread! Thank you very much.
