What is Sensory Processing Disorder?

Sensory processing disorder or SPD in short, is a sort of `traffic jam' in the brain. Some bits of sensory information get `tied up in traffic,' and certain parts of the brain do not get the sensory information they need to do their jobs."

Some people with SPD are oversensitive to things in their environment. Common sounds may be painful and the light touch of a shirt may chafe their skin.

Others with sensory processing disorder may be uncoordinated, bump into object, be unable to tell where their limbs are in space and find it hard to engage in conversation or play

Sensory Processing Disorder?

8/10 of the parents, who believed in Singapore Brain Development Centre’s Brain Training programs, have children who have Sensory Processing Issues.

Some moms who we met struggled with their children’s behavioral issues, as early as when they were a toddler. Yet, some moms, feedback that the issues they thought could be overcome when their child grows older; as with the adage, “you grow wiser as you grow older,” became a nightmare to them as they experienced the opposite of a worsened condition in their child.

SPD Treatment @ Singapore Brain

Here at Singapore Brain Development Centre, our treatment for Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is a fun, play-based intervention that takes place in a sensory-rich environment. We use occupational therapy programs for treatment of SPD or sensory issues in disorders such as Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Autism or Sensory imbalances. It may be supplemented with listening therapy or other complementary therapies.

Sensory Processing: Auditory

➢ Responds negatively to unexpected or loud noises➢ Overly sensitive➢ Unable to take instructions or not responding towards calling➢ Unaware or not concerned with the environment

Sensory Processing: Visual

➢ Prefers to be in the dark➢ Hesitates going up and down steps➢ Avoids bright lights➢ Stares intensely at people or objects➢ Avoids eye contact

Sensory Processing: Taste/Smell

➢ Avoids certain tastes/smells that are typically part of children’s diets

➢ Routinely smells non-food objects➢ Seeks out certain tastes or smells – Sensitive taste buds➢ Does not seem to smell strong odors

Sensory Processing: Body Position

➢ Fidgets or continually seeks all kinds of movement activities➢ Push or bang on people or object➢ Hangs on other people or objects, even in familiar situations➢ Seems to have weak muscles, tires easily, has poor endurance

or stamina➢ Walks on toes

Sensory Processing: Movement

➢ Anxious or distressed when feet leave the ground – afraid of heights

➢ Avoids climbing, jumping, swinging or spinning➢ Avoids playground equipment➢ Takes excessive risks while playing, has no safety awareness

Sensory Processing: Touch

➢ Avoids getting messy in glue, sand, finger paint, tape➢ Is sensitive to certain fabrics (clothing, bedding)➢ Touches people and objects at an irritating level➢ Avoids going barefoot, especially in grass or sand➢ Less awareness of pain or temperature

Sensory Processing: Social & Emotional Behavior

➢ Jumps from one activity to another frequently and it interferes with play➢ Has difficulty paying attention➢ Is overly affectionate with others➢ Seems anxious or insecure➢ Sensitive➢ Is accident prone➢ Has difficulty making friends – does not express emotions or too rough➢ Displays anxiety or insecurity with new environment, takes longer time to adjust – normally termed as

shy➢ Avoids new things such as food, activities etc.➢ Gets excited or high emotions easily when triggered
