General Description

TheSENSIT®InfraredEthaneDectector,referredtoas“IRED”,isdesignedtodetectthepresenceofethanegasinamethanegassample.TheIREDcandetect250partsperbillion(ppb)upto500ppmethane.TheIREDisusedtodetermineifmethanedetectedintherangeof50-2000ppmisofsimilarmake-uptothatofpipelinegas(whichcontainsethane)orisnaturallyoccurringmethanefromothersourcessuchasorganicdecay.TheIREDisnotdesignedforhighconcentrationsordeterminingactualethanecontentfromwithinapipeline.

TheIREDsensesgasusingInfrared(IR)AbsorptionSpectroscopyincombinationwithanelectronicnarrowband-passfilter.Thistechnologyutilizesaninfraredlightsourcewithanoutputthatischangedwhen certain gasesabsorb the light output. The filter only allows specific lightwavelengths to bemonitoredandmeasured.TheconcentrationofgasisproportionaltotheamountofspecificIRlightabsorbedandisdisplayedinPPBorPPM.

TheIREDhasa largedisplay indicatingbothsustainedandpeakreadingconcentrationsandotherinstrumentfunctions.Aninternalpumpprovidesrapidsamplingintothedetectionchamber.Bluetoothdata transmission provides communication of real time and stored data. Optional GPS with DataLoggingallowforfurtherrecordingoftime,dateandlocationdata.

Thebatterypackislocatedonthebacksideoftheinstrumenthousing.ThebatteriesareLithiumIonrechargeableandonlyavailablefromSensitTechnologies.

Toremovethebatterypackturntheretainingscrews¼turn.Pullthebottomofthepackawayfromthemainhousing.Thebatterypackmaybechargedwhilestillinthemainhousing,buttheinstrumentwillnotbeabletobeusedduringthistime.

Toreplace,slidethetoptabsofthebatterypackintotheretainersatthetopofthemainhousing.Pushthebottomintoplaceandturnandlocktheretainingscrews.

i. Ifthemethaneconcentrationistoohighamessagewillbedisplayed(backgroundtoohigh), indicatingtheneedtore-zeroandattemptmeasuringagain. ii. Forhighreadingsmovetheprobeslightlyawayfromtheprevioussource.Foraccurate resultsmethaneconcentrationsof50-2000ppmarerequired.

d. Ethaneconcentrationisindicatedonthedisplayshowing“RESULT”andthereading.The informationisalsostoredinthe“MEASUREMENTLOG”forlaterdownloadand/orreview.

e. PressingtheAbutton“EXIT”willreturntothemainscreendisplaying”IRED”,“READYFOR MEASUREMENT”.

3. PressingandholdingtheAbuttonwillactivatethestandbymodeorshutdownsequence.Thedisplaywill show“SHUTDOWN”ontheleftsideand“STANDBY”ontheright.PresstheAbuttontoturnthe instrumentoff.PresstheCbuttontoplaceintostandbymodetoreducebatteryconsumption.Thiswill alsoreducethewarmuptimetoafewminutes.Standbymodeshouldonlybeusedforuptotwohours.

Ethane (C2H6) to Methane (CH4) Ratio

WiththeuseofaSensitIREDandPMDyoucanaccuratelyandefficientlydeterminethepercentageofethaneinamethanesamplebetween50-2400ppm.Therearetwomethodstoachievethedesiredresultswhichareoutlinedbelow.Thepicturebelowdepictsthetelescopicprobe(barholeprobemayalsobeused)attachedtotheinletoftheIRED(withpumpon)andthePMD(withpumpoff)inletattachedtotheexhaustoftheIRED.Thisallowsbothdevicestoosimultaneouslyanalyzethesamesample.

Method 1 - Procedure for IRED/PMD Paired Sample Analysis to Simultaneously Analyze the Same Sample

1. WiththeprobeofchoiceattachedtotheinletofthePMD(PumpOn),searchforanacceptablestablesamplesizerangingfrom50-2400ppmCH4.

2. DisconnecttheprobetubingfromthePMD(leavetheprobeinplace).TurnthePMDpumpoffandattachthepairinghosetotheIREDexhaustandthePMDinlet.

3. StartthezeroingprocessontheIRED.Uponthecompletionofthezeroprocess,theIREDwillbeepanda120secondscountdowntimerwillbedisplayed.

4. Attachtheprobeofchoicethatisstillinplacefromstep2totheinletoftheIREDandpressthe“B”buttontostartthetest.Thetestwilllast40seconds.

5. Duringthetest,monitorthePMDmethanereadings.Notethepeakmethanereadingduringthe40secondtest.Thiswillberequiredtoestablisharatio.

6. Attheendofthetest,theIREDwilldisplay“RESULT”andbeep.Thepeakethanereadingwillbedisplayed.

Method 2 - Procedure IRED/PMD Independent Sample Analysis

1. WiththeprobeofchoiceattachedtotheinletofthePMD,searchforanacceptablestablesamplesizerangingfrom50-2400ppmCH4.

2. StartthezeroingprocessontheIRED.Uponthecompletionofthezeroprocess,theIREDwillbeepanda120secondcountdowntimerwillbedisplayed.

3. NotethemethanereadingonthePMD.Thiswillberequiredtoestablisharatio.DisconnecttheprobetubingfromthePMD(leavetheprobeinplace)andattachtheprobetotheinletoftheIRED.Pressthe“B”buttonontheIREDtobeginthe40secondmeasurement.

4. Attheendofthetest,theIREDwilldisplay“RESULT”andbeep.Thepeakethanereadingwillbedisplayed.
