Searching for Alice

From de Grummond Collection to Oxford, England

Teresa S. Welsh, Ph.D., MLISteresa.welsh@usm.edu

Background The Reverend Charles L. Dodgson (1832-1898), an Oxford mathematician whose pen name was Lewis Carroll, was fond of children and became friends with the three young daughters of the Dean of his college, Christ Church.

One summer's day in 1862 he entertained them on a boat trip with a story of Alice's adventures in a magical world entered through a rabbit-hole. Ten-year-old Alice was so entranced that she begged him to write it down for her. It took him some time to hand-write the tale and complete the 37 illustrations.

Alice finally received the 90-page book, dedicated to 'a dear child, in memory of a

summer day', in November 1864. The original manuscript is owned by the British Library and is available online in digital format: ww.bl.uk/onlinegallery/ttp/alice/accessible/page1.html#content

“A Boat, Beneath a Sunny Sky” by Lewis Carroll

A boat, beneath a sunny skyLingering onward dreamilyIn an evening of July –

Children three that nestle near,Eager eye and willing ear,Pleased a simple tale to hear –

Long has paled that sunny sky:Echoes fade and memories die:Autumn frosts have slain July.

Still she haunts me, phantomwise,Alice moving under skiesNever seen by waking eyes

Children yet, the tale to hear,Eager eye and willing ear,Lovingly shall nestle near.

In a Wonderland they lie,Dreaming as the days go by,Dreaming as the summers die:

Ever drifting down the stream –Lingering in a golden dream –Life, what is it but a dream?

(Through the Looking Glass, 1871)

First Edition

After financing the printing and publishing of 2,000 copies of the story out of his own pocket, Dodgson and illustrator John Tenniel felt the inking of the text and the artwork did not measure up to their standards.

Dodgson had presented 48 copies to friends and family; the remaining unbound sheets were sold to American publisher Appleton; 2,000 improved copies were published by Macmillan.

Only 23 copies of the first 1865 edition of Alice are known to have survived.
