The other key element is the Carbon used in Uni-TITANIUMsails, which is extruded as a 2m-wide continuous fibre sheetfor added strength yet with unmeasurable thinness. This lookssimilar to one of your old cassette tapes, but is a lot strongerand less likely to be used as emergency tell tales.
The four layers are dropped into a custom-formed variablegeometry thermoform in which the sail is UV-bonded into onepiece at 1 bar pressure under vacuum. This is a concaveform, and the ‘variable geometry’ part is the unmentionableproprietary part of this process. Suffice to say the copolymermelts around the carbon fibres and then down through theunidirectional weave cloth, and the result is a whole thatbecomes substantially greater than the sum of its parts.
What’s happened here is that instead of applying the load pathstructural members to a pre-made sail membrane, the sail skinand load path structures have been fabricated as one integral
product. The result is a sail that is formed to exactly the rightshape, as stiff as cross-grain plywood thanks to the unidirectionalpanels, as strong as the carbon load-bearing fibres can make it,and – here’s the bonus – it is not subject to UV degradation. Infact, quite the opposite, because along with heat, ultravioletlight is part of the process that bonds everything together.
This unidirectional carbon cloth is also massively strong aswell as gossamer light, and its job is to provide rigidity to resistthe typical twisting forces found in a sail that is being pulled infour directions – from the head, the tack and the clew, as wellas form the luff to the leech.
Hayes recalls how the development process started. “Whenwe made our very first (Uni) Titanium sail there was inevitablya certain amount of experimentation,” he said, “a sort ofsuck-it-and-see process where the materials were concerned.We sandwiched three layers of unidirectional cloth into a No 3jib built for Frank Pong’s R/P 76 JELIK. We knew the materialwas strong, but we didn’t expect the jib lead car to get ripped
straight out of the deck! So it’s strong –stronger than we realised. JELIK’s presentNo 3 only has one layer of unidirectional inthe sandwich, and it is holding up just fine.”
Another impressive result came recently atthe ORC World Championship, where Heinz-PeterSchmidt’s GP 42 NEO SILVA team earned Bronzemedals in Class A. They had high praise for their Uni-TITANIUMsails contributing to their success in a class of 27 boats fromseveral nations.
“The sails were incredibly light and flexible, but alsostable,” said Schmidt. “The trimmer’s work was much easierbecause the shapes never distorted, yet they could add depthand move the draft in the mainsail in a wide range of windspeed. The mainsail weighs only 25 kg, but we never have anyproblems when the wind is strong. In fact, our targets had to
be adjusted because we were 0.3 knots faster upwind!”Schmidt is no newcomer to success: his last boat won the
ORC European Championship in 2011 and again last year,and was also equipped with UK sails. He credited his team’songoing success with the support he has received from theUK Sails operation in Germany, one of 50 lofts located aroundthe world. It’s this strength in depth that has come togethertime and again over the decades to produce some of thefinest racing sails in the world, with the latest of these beingUK Titanium – strong, light, stiff, practically bulletproof, andbeautifully engineered. �

It is fitting that the name UK has chosen for this new materialis the very definition of strength, lightness, toughness anddurability: TITANIUM.
The process to produce TITANIUM resides in a corner ofHong Kong that is off-limits to visitors due to the sensitivityUK Sailmakers has to revealing the numerous innovationsdeveloped in the production of this material that may be theHoly Grail of sail materials.
“It’s a lot of science, a good helping of art, and a pinch ofblack magic,” says UK Sailmakers’ Barry Hayes of UKSailmakers’ massive loft in Hong Kong. “Titanium sails aretrue one-piece sails that have continuous yarns runningbetween the corners of the sail. They are the latest chapter ina story that began back in the 1980’s with UK Tape-Drive.”
When first introduced, Tape-Drive represented a remarkableinsight to knowing how to separate the load-bearing and theair-impermeability functions of a sail. Using carbon tapes thatfollowed the computer predicted load paths between thecorners of the sail, Tape-Drive was a leap forward in producingmembranes that were strong in the right directions withouthaving excess weight.
UK’s TITANIUM sails continue this heritage of innovationthrough a new process of building the film-fibre-laminate sails.It starts with two thin films made of tough PET that are coated
with a co-polymer to comprise the outside faces of theconstruction, with the familiar pattern of load-bearing carbonfibres oriented along load paths in the sail. In Uni-TITANIUMsails, a uni-directional carbon cloth is also introduced betweenthe skins to help further stabilize sail shape.
This construction method has the exterior films perform thecombination of both the ‘finish’ and the glue that holdseverything together. Shiny and weatherproof on the outside,the grey (or black) PET co-polymer skins are tacky on theinside, holding the whole layer cake together as it isconstructed and also providing the resin that is going to meltdown and through the interior elements, just like the cheesein a Reuben sandwich. There is no need for added glue on thefibres, which contributes to not only excess weight, but in timethe brittle glues break down and can cause de-laminations.
Furthermore, that makes for lighter sails (by 15-30%),happier foredeck teams, and ultimately happier owners whoare not replacing their mis-shapened and broken sails as often.
The PET film is a key element to the sandwich: at only 1.3micrometers thick, this material provided by Dimension Polyantis incredibly tough, and will be most familiar for its use in plasticlitre bottles and in some paper currencies - try tearing either ofthese apart. Sunlight and heat up to 50°C does nothing to PET,not even make it shrink like many other similar materials.

When introduced a year ago to the marketplace, Jason Ker’sBolt 37 design seemed like an impossible dream: a manageable-sized pure race boat that promised to be fast, fun to sail, offshore-capable, and with all the features expected in a modernrace boat, but at a price affordable to a broad marketplace. Andnearly a year after the launch of the first boat, its speed onpaper and in design renderings have translated into reality, withboat-for-boat horizon jobs achieved against many larger racerand cruiser-racer designs.
But how can this be possible for a production boat, and onefitted with a Hall high-modulus carbon spars and Harken hardware,at a base boat price of only €149,000? Anything else thatcomes this close in performance is usually twice this price.
The answer is in the careful attention made to choosing theright trade-offs in performance and cost-efficiency in both thedesign features and the materials and production techniques usedin the build. These choices have been made with the extensiveexperience Ker has had with numerous other performance designscreated in both custom and production form from a variety ofbuilders around the world.
‘Our brief was to create a low-cost high-performance boatthat could interest the large market of club-based racers whowanted an accessible, easy-to-race design,’ said Jason Ker.‘Furthermore, this boat had deliver excitement and performance,but also at a modest price and good build quality. We think wehave achieved this in the Bolt.’
In design, Ker’s extensive use of Fine-Marine RANS CFDcomputations on their in-house cluster of computers has producedan attractive low freeboard hull shape that nicely balances theopposing forces of stability and drag. The quite generous sail planproduces plenty of power, and with minimal wetted surfacearea the hull shape allows impressive boatspeed when other boatsare struggling just to move in light air. Yet when the breezecomes on, the hull shape has excellent form stability and sufficientrighting moment to continue to harness that power and hit planingspeeds sooner than most of the competition.
While offered at a low price, the build process for the Bolt 37represents the same no-compromise approach using the latesttechniques found among any contemporary high-performanceproduction boat builder. The hull, bulkheads, stiffeners and thedeck are built in female tooling with E-glass and use of Core-cellM-Foam core, a superior material 40% more expensive thanconventional PVC foams, with vinylester resin infused withvacuum assistance to minimize voids and control the amountsof resin to keep the design weight consistent enough for one-designstandards and at just under 4000kg. This choice of resin in thelaminates takes advantage of the compatibility of vinylester withthe gelcoat finish for a further reduction in cost and build time.
CNC-moulded composite skins encase the cast steel keelfin, which supports the antimony-lead alloy bulb cast in CNC-milledplug, then faired with templates and painted. This approachensures that no additional fairing and finishing is necessary beforeracing. Static and dynamic loads from the keel are linked to thehull and rig via an internal alloy frame structure bonded to the hull.
At such an impressively low price, the Bolt 37 could bebought in bulk and easily start sprouting one-design fleets.However, an important aspect of the Bolt’s design is in the excellentvalue for rated performance when racing under ORCi and even IRChandicaps. No doubt the cost-control credits being built in tothe HPR rule will also make the Bolt an attractive option forthose that want to play among similar-sized high-performancedesigns but at a fraction of the cost.
‘We are very pleased with the reception we have had amongthe first several Bolt owners,’ said Karem Ozkan of KA Yachting,developer of the Bolt 37. ‘Even with teams that represent a mixtureof talent levels, they are still able to access the high performancelevels in this design. In this way we feel the Bolt is truly abreakthrough in its ability to deliver unparalleled performance valueto the racing sailor.

Our policy is never to stand still and we have an ongoing programmeof testing and evaluation of new materials, components andmanufacturing technology. We work very closely with technologypartners, keeping us at the forefront of new developments. As boatsare becoming faster and lighter so we too are taking advantageof developments in material and design technology.
Product, fabric and component testing and quality assuranceare at the core of all our product development programmes. Webelieve that no other marine brand invests as much time andresource into testing, with over 25% of our company employed inproduct design and development. We have our own in-house testingfacility as well as working with leading laboratories around the world.
We are able to innovate through understanding the challengesfacing our customers. We spend time working with, and often sailingwith, those same customers. This challenges our developmentteam to come up with creative and sometimes experimental productideas. A great example of a proactive product development strategyis the Gill Race Collection.
Inspired by the highest-level match racing and day racing regattasin the best sailing venues around the world, our research anddevelopment programme resulted in the aspirational and bold RaceCollection. Access to teams in events such as the 52 Super Series,the Extreme Sailing Series and others was a key component ofthe process, with our product development team being invitedbehind the scenes in terms of attending briefing sessions,helping with boat maintenance, on-the-water race training and evencompeting with teams.
Getting so close to today’s top crews allowed us to understandthe priorities and requirements of the individual team members,from bowman to helmsman through to the shore crew, for whomwe carefully established what they liked and what they didn’t like
about their current kit bag. It also allowedteams to challenge us to find design solutionsthat addressed the rigours of racing at the top of the sport. The end result was a no-compromise, performance Race Collectionof co-ordinated team kit. Every design feature had to earn itsplace and those not deemed necessary were stripped out.
This development process never stops. We continue to learnfrom our partners on the professional racing circuit. For 2014we are once again working with our friends at Emirates TeamNew Zealand supplying all the team requirements for the 2014Extreme Sailing Series which recently kicked off in Singapore.Working with teams likes this gives us the best-informed feedbackwith which to reassess our products constantly and identifyfuture development opportunities. �

sunshine, the brilliant blue waters, and the intense pace of theevent with the mix of offshore and in-port races, in identicalboats where only seconds separate first and last, is a fantasticway to improve sailing skill and teamwork.”
With arrangements for the 2015 event well underway, interestis gaining momentum with seven teams already confirmed. Theplan is to run a four-day practice and warm-up session at Oman’sluxury oceanfront development – The Wave, Muscat – beforethe fleet embarks on a two-week, 676-nautical mile race westbound towards Saudi Arabia.
The first 105-nautical mile leg is to Sohar (Oman), followedby the longest leg (172 nautical miles) round the spectacularMusandam Peninsula to Ras Al Khaimah (UAE). Leg 3 is toDubai (UAE), followed by Abu Dhabi (UAE), Doha (Qatar), and AlKhobar (Saudi Arabia) where the event will conclude with a finalin-port race and closing ceremony.
The Farr 30, the choice of boat for this fast-paced event thatcombines in-port competition with multi-stage long-distanceoffshore endurance races couldn’t be better because it deliverson speed, performance and versatility.
The huge course area, which spans over four countries, providesa variety of sailing conditions, with backdrops ranging fromremote desserts, to the huge high-rise metropolises of Dubaiand Abu Dhabi. While most of the areas around the coast arecharted some areas have limited data, which makes navigationand tactical skills paramount. Navigating through an oil field atnight and passing from the Arabian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman throughthe Strait of Hormuz, round the Musandam Peninsula wheremountains rise up 2,000 metres above sea level are just someof the course highlights which make this event so unique, excitingand unforgettable.
The seven stopover venues are carefully chosen to ensurecompetitors experience a real taste of the rich cultural traditionsand sumptuous hospitality of the Middle East. Formula 1-styleprizegiving ceremonies and special VIP events after each stageof the Tour – often in the presence of Royalty – provide plenty ofopportunity for the local community to showcase its heritage.
Given the nature of the Tour, which involves sailing from oneside of the Arabian Peninsula to the other, the logistics oftransferring kit, and the associated paperwork involved arepotentially complex. Thankfully, Oman Sail the organisers are ableto offer support and it does pay off to be well prepared.
Among those hoping to take part again in 2015 are Team Messe
Frankfurt – the young student team from Plymouth – headed byMarcel Herrera who finished second overall to Sidney Gavignetand team on EFG Bank (Monaco), and Team Delft Challenge –TU Delft led by Kay Heemskerk who took third. Although amateur,these young teams of students demonstrated how it is possibleto use the event as a platform not only to improve teamwork,but also to perfect professional skills on and of the water to ensuresponsors gain maximum exposure.
Herrera commenting on the event and how it provides the perfectstarting point for teams looking to make the transition into theprofessional sailing world, said: “This event is ideal for teamslooking at making a name for themselves to emerge into theprofessional yacht racing world. It is a great foundation to find andintroduce sponsors to the sport of sailing. Their expectationswill be surpassed allowing teams to obtain a gradual commitmentfrom commercial sponsors to support them on other campaignsand races. It is also a great winter racing venue with consistentand Grand Prix level conditions.”

Teams looking for winter training and a unique and challengingevent that promises maximum exposure in a friendly, receptiveand affluent environment, could do worse than sign up for the fifthedition of EFG Sailing Arabia – The Tour (SATT) scheduled for15-28 February 2015.
With high level sailors including the likes of leading Frenchsailors/SATT 2014 winners, Sidney Gavignet, Damien Iehl andCedric Pouligny, plus Bertrand Pacé, and Britain’s Dee Caffarirating SATT as one of the best events of its type on the circuit,it is not surprising this annual event is fast gaining a reputationas the ultimate test of all round sailing skill.
On similar lines to the Tour de France à la Voile, this eventnaturally appeals to commercially driven teams seeking maximumbrand exposure and big returns. However, the focus is also onclub/corporate teams, or teams from the armed forces thatmay wish to not only exploit their sailing talent on the internationalcircuit, but also to use SATT as a team building exercise, andas a platform in which to help build international relations.
Since its inception in 2011, EFG Sailing Arabia – The Tour (SATT)has grown in popularity and prestige both locally and internationallyand has become a media success story. In its first year, theevent yielded US$3.8m of PR media return, in the followingyears that value doubled to more than US$9m and in 2014 itachieved more than US$13.5m of coverage.
At the fourth edition of the event in February 2014, a highlycompetitive mixed fleet of professionals, students and local teams,including an all-girls team led by American Katie Pettibone (formerAmerica’s Cup and VOR sailor), and the Royal Navy of Oman,enjoyed two weeks of intense one-design racing. The seven-leg,760-mile course from Bahrain to Muscat (Oman) via the ArabianPeninsula gave teams the opportunity to enjoy close, tactical racingin some of the best summer sailing conditions imaginable.
With EFG’s continued support, the 2015 edition of this OmanSail-organised event is expected to be even better with newrace course and format designed to improve the overall experienceand offer locals, amateurs and professionals from Europe,North America and beyond a chance to experience the Middle Eastas a prime international sailing location. The timing in Februaryprovides those in the northern hemisphere a perfect opportunityto escape winter and enjoy top-class racing in sparkling sunshineand crystal clear waters.
