Practical
AIM: To investigate the effects of osmosis in gummy bears or grapes.
Equipment
Cups/glass
2 or 3 Grapes or gummy bears
Water
Salt solution
Paper towel
Measuring jug
Optional – weighing scales

Practical
To make the salt solution, add salt a bit at a time to some warm water and stir until it no longer dissolves. Leave it to cool completely before beginning the experiment.
Method 1. Set up 2 cups or glasses; one with 100ml of water and one with 100ml
salt solution. LABEL THESE W & SS. If you have weighing scales, record the mass of both of the grapes or gummy bears
2. Place one grape or gummy bear into the water and one into the salt solution.
3. Leave the investigation set up for 1 hour and observe what happens. If you weighed the grapes or gummy bears before, clean off excess water and then re-weigh them.
If you don’t have access to weighing scales, compare it to one that hasn’t been in either solution.

AIM: To make our own acid and alkali indicator to test household substances using red cabbage
EquipmentRed cabbage, chopped into small strips. You could also use blueberries or beetroot.
Kettle – Take care when using a kettle as the boiling water may scold
Sieve
Syringe/ straw
Household substances to test. Examples could be: soap or washing-up liquid, vinegar, water.
Colour chart – you can print or copy this before you start. Note that the colour chart is for red cabbage only and results may differ if you use beetroot or blueberries.

Method1. Place a spoonful of chopped red cabbage into a small bowl2. Cover the cabbage with boiling water from the kettle and
leave for 1 minute (collect your samples whilst waiting).3. Use a sieve to remove any cabbage from the liquid whilst
pouring into your bowl/jug.4. Place one or two drops of your household substance samples
on to a plate around the edge and label, using paper so you know which substance is which. You could use a syringe/ straw to dab them.
5. Add a drop of the cabbage liquid to the samples and see if there is any colour change. Use the colour chart

Equipment 1 cup 1 straw½ teaspoon of sugar 1 teaspoon of washing-up liquidA jug of warm waterA tablespoon A teaspoonA kitchen surface
Note: If your kitchen surface is not smooth you may need to use a plastic tablecloth

Method1. Place 2 tablespoons and 2 teaspoons of warm water into a cup 2. Add ½ teaspoon of sugar and stir it until dissolved 3. Add 1 teaspoon of washing-up liquid and stir well 4. Wet a small section of your kitchen work surface by dipping your fingers into the bubble mixture and spreading it over an area roughly the size of your hand. Submerge one end of the straw in the bubble solution so that it’s completely coated. 5. Place the coated end of the straw vertically onto the wet section of your desk. Then through the other end of the straw blow a fairly large bubble. 6. Dip the straw back into the bubble solution, then, aiming for the centre of the first bubble, gently push it inside. 7. Gently blow a second bubble on the surface of the desk inside the first bubble. 8. Try blowing a third bubble inside the inner bubble and possibly even a fourth inside the third bubble. See how many you can get!

Equipment 1 empty small plastic bottle (Fruit shoot/small water bottle size is ideal) 1 balloon 1 dry plastic funnel Vinegar / Lemon juiceBicarbonate of soda (available from supermarkets) Small plastic spoon/spatula

Method 1. Place 1-2 teaspoons of white bicarbonate of soda powder
into a new balloon. The best way to do this is to insert the end of a dry plastic funnel into the balloon and carefully add the bicarbonate. Shake to ensure it goes into the balloon.
2. Remove the funnel and place the balloon on the table. 3. Place the funnel in the empty plastic bottle and fill the
bottle with vinegar to a depth of 2-3 cm. 4. Remove the funnel and place to one side 5. Carefully fix the balloon to the top of the plastic bottle. Be
careful not to position the balloon upright.6. Place the bottle on a table and tip the bicarbonate into the
vinegar by lifting the balloon upright. 7. Watch carefully what happens.

AIM: To create a homemade lava lamp
EquipmentA clean plastic bottle, try to use one with smooth sides
Water
Vegetable Oil (or you could use Mineral or Baby Oil instead)
Fizzing tablets (such as Alka Seltzer)
Food Colouring

Method1. Fill the bottle up about 1 quarter with water.
2. Pour the vegetable oil in the bottle until is almost full. You may want to use a measuring jug with a spout or a funnel. You may have to wait a couple of minutes for the oil and water to separate.
3. Add a few drops of your favourite food colouring. Watch as the colour sinks through the oil.
4. Break your fizzy tablet in half and drop part of it into the bottle. Get ready … here come the bubbly blobs!
5. You can even get a torch, turn off the lights and drop in another half tablet. This time shine the flashlight through the lava lamp while the blobs are bubbling!

Method1. Boil the kettle2. Measure out 200ml of water from the boiled kettle using a
measuring jug3. Put 1 cube of jelly in to the jug4. Time how long it takes to dissolve completely and record the
time. Rinse your jug out.5. Cut the next cube in half using the knife or using some
scissors. 6. Repeat steps 1 and 2. 7. Put both of the cut jelly pieces into the jug and repeat step 4.8. Cut the next cube into quarters and repeat steps 1-2.9. Put all 4 pieces into the jug and repeat step 4.10. What did you notice each time you cut the jelly up into smaller
pieces?

Food colouring
A spoon
Method1. Fill the glass 1/2 full with water
2. Spray some shaving cream on top of the water to fill the glass to ¾ full.
3. Use your finger or a spoon to spread the shaving cream evenly over the top of the water. The top of the shaving cream should be flat.
4. Mix ½cup water with 10 drops of food colouring in a separate container. Gently add the coloured water, spoonful by spoonful, to the top of the shaving cream. When it gets too heavy, watch it storm!

Method1. Colour in the rocket template and then cut it out 2. Cut a piece of the thicker straw to approximately the same
length as the rocket 3. Pinch the end of this straw together and put a piece of sticky
tape over the end to tape it securely shut 4. Test there are no air leaks by blowing into the straw 5. Tap this straw to the back of the rocket. Ensure the closed end
is at the top of the rocket 6. Slide the thin straw into the thicker straw and angle the rocket
ready for launching 7. Blow a big puff of air into the thin straw and watch the rocket
take off
