Australian Air Mail Society Hosts History Month Talk
Carried over from
last year, a talk on
Sir Hubert Wilkins
was held on May
5th, and given a
personal touch by
Kaye and Andrew
Ridge, great-niece
and great-great
nephew
respectively.
The society was honoured to have members of the Wilkins family attend the meeting
4
Born at Mt. Bryan East, S.A. in 1888 Wilkins was to become a
photographer, adventurer, Antarctic and Arctic explorer and pioneer
aviator.
During 1913 he joined Stefansson’s Expedition to the Canadian
Arctic, which gave him a taste for the Polar regions, which he pursued until
his death in 1958. During WWI he was a photographer and correspondent,
mainly in Europe. He unsuccessfully entered the 1919 Air Race; was the first
to fly an aircraft in Antarctica; first to fly from Alaska to Spitzbergen across
the North Pole (for which he was knighted by King George V); and was taken
as a passenger on the first flight around the world by a Zeppelin in 1928.
In
1931 he set
out on his
most
ambitious
venture yet,
to take a
submarine,
the Nautilus,
under the ice
5
to the North Pole. Although he failed in this attempt to reach the Pole, it
was this adventure
that earned him
the reputation of
“A Man Before His
Time”. In 1957 he
was the first man
to fly over both
Poles in the same
year.
To cram
such a full and
varied life into an
evening was quite
a challenge, but Andrew Ridge ably managed to do that, with the aid of early
film and TV clips. On display were some twenty books, most of which were
about Wilkins, while others featured him, also many newspaper cuttings and
reports from those early days. All material came from their private
collection.
Covid-19 which had caused the cancellation of History Month in
6
2020, was again a contributing factor to keeping our attendance down due
to the restrictions imposed. It also restricted the usual widely distributed
magazine to a site on the web. Even so, 44 visitors and members attended,
and Colleen Martin and Peter Humby did a sterling job in providing
refreshments for this crowd. Both Kaye and Andrew were inundated with
people wanting to exchange views and ask more questions during the break,
so that the
meeting did not
break up until
after 10pm.
So
ended a fitting
tribute to the
man who has
often been
headlined as
“The Hero
Whom Australia
Forgot”.
Fortunately,
since the
restoration of his birthplace, several groups have sprung up and Wilkins is
now finding his place in the history of his native land. Indeed, there have
been many such meetings already this year, and soon we will know more
about this intrepid man so that the negative headlines can be discarded
once and for all. Only the Post Office has been slow to acknowledge him,
issuing only an aerogramme in his honour, and that was one of a set of five
commemorating Aviation Feats.
Thanks to Kaye and Andrew for giving us this very personal insight to
one of South Australia’s great achievers.

VALE ALISON LILLIAN KERR (née JAMES)
(17th April 1929 – 7th May 2021)
Alison grew up in Adelaide as part
of a family of seven children.
She cared for her family and
friends and nursing was a natural
career choice. She lived in Woomera
for a short time with her husband
Jake before moving back to Adelaide.
It was family that lead her to stamp
collecting; she often put aside stamps
for her grandsons and joined the PS
of SA with her sister Biddy in
February 1998.
The two sisters were always
willing to help in the kitchen at the Society‘s evening meetings and at the
club Open Days. Alison was a regular attendee at evening meetings, even
after Biddy’s death, but in later years, health issues prevented her from
regularly attending. She continued to have frequent contact with
members of the club through the external circuit book scheme and
continued to grow her stamp collection.
Between 2003 and 2011 Alison was a member of the
PS of SA committee. Many committee meetings were held at her home.
She was an excellent host, making sure her “darlings” always had a
cuppa and a biscuit. In 2011 she and her sister were awarded the
Krickhauff Award in recognition of their contribution to the Society.
She had a fondness for Sauvignon Blanc, indeed at the Society’s end of
year celebrations, Bernie Beston and others would share the love. The
biggest question was how many bottles would be required. Her warmth
and humour will be missed by her philatelic friends. She is survived by
two sons, their wives and four grandchildren.
