Confirma4on
The Sacrament of Confirma-on
is one of the three Sacraments of
Ini-a-on along with Bap-sm and
Eucharist. Taken together, these
Sacraments are what make us
Chris-an to our very core. In the
ancient Church, these sacraments
were celebrated or received at the
same -me - when one was
bap-zed, they were given Holy
Communion and Confirmed. In the
Roman Catholic Church, La-n Rite
which we are, these three
sacraments found themselves
separated over the centuries to this
very day. Only those over 7 years
old who have not been bap-zed
receive these three sacraments
together, usually for the first -me at
the Easter Vigil. In the Eastern
Church, both the Eastern Rite
Catholics and the Orthodox, the
three sacraments remain bound
together.
Over the last fiBy years, we
have seen the prepara-on and age
of Confirma-on change. Why?
Well, every bishop has the right to
decide how the Sacrament of
Confirma-on will be administered.
He decides what the prepara-on
will be, how old the confirmandi will
be and where the sacrament will be
celebrated.
While I didn’t grow up in this
diocese, I understand that Bishop
Kearney confirmed at around the
8th grade age. When Bishop Sheen
replaced Bishop Kearney, he raised
the age to Junior Year of High
School. When Bishop Hogan took
the reigns of leadership, it was
returned to early High School years.
Bishop Clark came next and
confirmed young people at the age
their parents and parish catechists
deemed ready - usually between
6th and 8th grade. Bishop Matano
has decided that he will confirm
candidates at the end of their 9th
grade year.
The amount of prepara-on has
changed from as li<le as six weeks
to as much as two years of
prepara-on. Bishop Matano has
decided that two years is
appropriate for our young people to
learn about their faith. Those
young people in Catholic Middle
and High Schools will have much of
their prepara-on rolled into their
Religious Studies classes. Students
in public or private schools will have
their prepara-on here at the parish.
We will have the sessions on
Sunday aBernoons, beginning with
lunch and followed by the sessions.
We will have different people
teaching the sessions, including
myself, Fr. Caton, the deacons,
Jamie O’Mara, Donna Gray, and
others. We promise not to be
boring.
The fee we charge is for the
books, the lunches, the materials,
etc. No one is ge8ng paid to teach
the children. We want you to
come, even if you can’t pay. Please,
just let me know and I’ll
confiden-ally take care of things for
you. No embarrassment need be
experienced. We don’t charge for
sacraments ever! We want you to
receive the grace of Confirma-on!
Odds and Ends
Over the last few weeks, I’ve
put our the call for volunteers for a
Parish Fall Fes-val. Unfortunately,
not enough people responded to
really get it going. So, we’re going
to think about preparing for a Fall
2016 fes-val. We will s-ll have the
St. Lawrence School Walkathon and
will sponsor many events for the
whole parish to get involved.
In the bulle-n, we publish the
a<endance of the weekend Masses
and we see that the summer
months have a bit of a dip. We’re
aware you’re on vaca-on or away at
your co<ages. When you return,
please remember to make up your
envelopes that you might have
missed. Thanks!
Let’s get the word out that we
have a great Pre-K program here at
St. Lawrence School. If you’re
interested, please call our school at
585-225-3870. Our prices are very
reasonable and compe--ve. In
fact, we’re much cheaper than day
care.
Lastly, school is ge8ng closer
and closer. To all school children - I
know a lot of you don’t want the
summer to end. I know some of
you can’t wait to go back to school.
I hope you can enjoy these last few
days of summer vaca-on.
Remember, God is with you in your
fun! And that message goes to
everyone — have some fun before
the Fall comes!
