5. Step 1: Select the date range for which you want to obtain data.

• Example here: 2010 - 2017

5

6. Step 2: Select the companies for which you want to obtain data.

• Amadeus via WRDS allows you to select companies in four different ways.

(a) You can manually add company codes (BvDEP ID number, ISIN number, Ticker symbol)

(b) You can upload a .txt file containing the company codes.

(c) You can chose from a saved codelist (see Option (a)).

(d) You can search the entire datase (this is recommended for most research purposes)

• Example here: Search the entire database.

6

7. Step 2 (cont.): Select a Dataset (if you have chosen “Search the entire datase”)

• Amadeus classifies companies into 4 categories based on operating revenue, total assets, andnumber of employees.

– V: Very Large Companies

∗ Operating revenue >= 100 million EUR

∗ Total assets >= 200 million EUR

∗ Employees >= 1,000

– L: Large Companies

∗ Operating revenue >= 10 million EUR

∗ Total assets >= 20 million EUR

∗ Employees >= 150

– M: Medium-sized Companies

∗ Operating revenue >= 1 million EUR

∗ Total assets >= 2 million EUR

∗ Employees >= 15

– S: Small Companies

∗ All companies not included in another category.

• Which companies you should choose depends on your research question.

– Example here: Very Large + Large + Medium-sized Companies

• You can also choose to only obtain data from companies in certain countries. Since data queriesin Amadeus can be fairly large, it might be necessary to split your query into multiple queries fordifferent countries.

– Example here: Germany

7

8. Step 3: Select the variables on which you want to obtain data.

• Amadeus Financials classifies company data into different categories.

– Identification Codes

– General Information

– Reporting Information - Year Specific

– Balance Sheet Items

– Profit & Loss Items

– Financial Ratios

• You can find a list of all variables included in Amadeus Financials by clicking on “VariableDescriptions” on the top of the page.

• Example here: Total assets, Gross profit

8

9. Step 4: Select the output format (and compression type and date format)

• You can obtain the output of your query in different data formats.

• For very large queries it might be recommendable to additionally chose a compression type.

• Example here: STATA file (.dta)

10. Click on “Submit Query”

9

10. Your query is now processed. A new tab opens which will contain the download link once your queryis completed. Click on the download link.
