1964 - Study examined potential to widen Route 220 between Clifton Forge

and Roanoke.

1990’s - Study examined a section of Route 220 from Roanoke to Clifton

Forge as part of the TransAmerica Corridor to provide 4 lanes.

Funding not acquired as part of this effort.

Early 2000’s - Preliminary plans developed for three projects to 4-lane

approximately 7.2 miles. Portion of right of way acquired.

Insufficient funds to finalize design and acquire all right of way.

2012 thru 2013 - Highway Safety Improvement Projects extended shoulders where

possible, upgraded and installed guardrail, upgraded signs, added

rumble strips, and enhanced markings in roadway.

2015 - Final plans being developed as a Safety Improvement Project

replacing two narrow bridges north of Route 43 Intersection.

2015 - Begin development of preliminary plans as a safety improvement

project to upgrade the two-lane roadway from Route 43 Intersection

to Route 727 Intersection. Proposed as three (3) projects in the Six
