introduction

Best known for:becoming a black major league baseball player when blacks were not allowed to play major league baseball.

3 Key qualities: bravery, perseverance and viewed problems as oportunities.

What I find interesting about Jackie robinson is that blacks were not allowed to play major league baseball and Jackie was a better baseball player than most whites in the league.

I CHOSE THIS PERSON BECAUSE...Jackie and I both like/liked baseball.

"Many people have asked me why I have pushed so hard all my life. wasn't I Jackie robinson? Didn't I have it made? I was sure of one thing. I was a black man in a white world. I never had it made."

Jackie's father Jerry left the family soon after Jackie was born and Jackie never saw his dad again.

At the end of the 1947 season Jackie's old friend Reverend Downs died.

After four years at UCla the school made a new rule that black athlete's were not allowed to play sports... that meant that jackie could no longer play college sports. I think that Jackie was sad because he had his mind set on sports being his job and/or career.

Jackie's brother Mack was in the olympics in track. He won a silver medal! Jackie was very happy for him.

Jackie was brave when he stepped onto the baseball field in his new brooklyn Dodgers uniform.

I think that Jackie was nervous that white fans wouldn't act kindly towards him.

Hispanics,African americans and asians could only use the "public" swimming pool and the local YMCA one day a week. Jackie and his friends hated the rule so they fought it the only way they could think of...They sneaked into the pool and took a swim. they were caught and taken to the towns sheriff office.

Jackie was a proven player. he no longer had to quietly accept bad calls from umpires or insults from players.

at Jackie's first major league baseball game white fans did not welcome Jackie warmly but Jackie controlled his temper and continued to play.

Now:one fourth of major league baseball players are black. When Jackie played major league Baseball: no black players were allowed to play major league baseball.

Jackie found out what Branch Rickey (owner of the Brooklyn Dogers) was up to, Jackie remembered it this way:"when I walked into Mr.Rickey's office he was puffing on a big cigar. He rose from his leather swivel chair and shook my hand. " Mr.Rickey got right to the point. "I think you can play Major league baseball." Jackie took the job.

In 1962 Jackie was inducted into the baseball hall of fame.

When Jackie decided to play baseball in the negro league he said he wanted to even though he hadn't played baseball since college.

PERSEVERED WHEN...at Jackie's first major league baseball game white fans didn't welcome him warmly but Jackie contiued to play.

SHOWED COMPASSION WHEN...Jackie's older brother Mack was in the olympics in track. He won a silver medal! Jackie was very happy for him.

TOOK ACTION BY... Hiispanics, african americans and asians could only use the towns "public" swimming pool and the local YMCA only one day a week. Jackie and his friends hated this rule. One day Jackie and one of his friend sneaked into the pool one a day they couldn't and they were caught and taken to jail.

MADE A DIFFERENCE WHEN..he joined the dogers and insipered many other black players to join major league baseball.

I'm A change maker when I... donate my old toys to

homeles shelters.

I'm Similar to my change maker because:Jackie and

I both like/likedbaseball.

My Change maker is

connected to muhammed ali because Jackie and muhammed

both changed the ways of sports.
