Mission Statement
The Mission of the Rhode Island Art Education Association is to offer opportunities for professional development, leadership and service in order to advance the quality
of art education.
Hello All, Summer is finally here! The snow days have extended our year but the end is in sight. Much has happened since the last newsletter. We have all hosted Youth Art Month exhibits and school events that showcased multiple student works. The RIAEA Educators’ Exhibit, that took place in the Krause Gallery at Moses Brown School, was wonderful and many attended the closing ceremony. Thanks go out to Kristin Heynen and Kristin Street for their efforts to make this a success. The Wickford Art Association once again hosted its high school exhibit and awarded scholarships to some very talented students. An event made possible with the assistance of gallery director Sarah Tallarico, and RIAEA past president Mia Thompson. The Rhode Island Alliance for Arts Education hosted PS 2014, the statewide public school art exhibit in May. The show, which took place in Providence at the URI Feinstein Campus, was fabulous and the districts highlighted were many. The 2014 Gift of Art to the State was from the district of Johnston. Thank you to the Alliance for its continued support of our students. This year’s NAEA National Conference was in sunny San Diego and several RIAEA members attended. This year’s theme was emerging technologies. If I may borrow from Deborah Reeves’ recent conference reflections, the emerging portion of this title was key. Our very own Peter Geisser emerged from the conference in his post as the Eastern Region Vice President, and Patricia Lucciolla was honored as the RI Arts Educator of the Year. Congratulations to both of them. This year’s conference also signaled the emergence of the National Coalition of Core Arts Standards. By the time you read this
newsletter, the new standards will have been officially unveiled by the NCCAS. I hope you all were able to watch the virtual launch. Check the national site for information and links to these new standards. On the topic of conferences, our RIAEA biannual conference will be this fall on November 8th at Salve Regina University in Newport, so save the date. Our theme this year is “RI Creates.” We all know that Rhode Island plays host to a vibrant and creative community. Join us as we look to our own backyard for inspiration, and please think about sharing yours. The RIAEA website has all the information you need to become a presenter. Once again we thank Salve Regina for assisting us in hosting this event, as well as Conference Chair Sue Suprock for agreeing to take on this endeavor for another year. Without our community supporters, and the hard work of our board members, we could not offer this conference to our members. As we prepare for the end of this school year, many of us have already started thinking about the fall. Whether we are working on curriculum, taking courses and participating in workshops, tending to our own artistic practices, or just relaxing in the sun with friends and family, we all know that our “teacher brain” never really shuts down. By the nature of what we teach, and who we are, we find inspiration everywhere. So have an inspirational summer, feed your artistic practice, and enjoy the sunshine. Regards, Nancy Comire Brandley
