Scaling and validation plans
Paolo Franz, Monica Spolaore
RFX-mod Programme Workshop 2009 – 20-22 January 2009
1) Optimization and validation of a reference RFX-mod database
2) Assessment of RFX scaling laws
3) Experiments and studies aiming at the comparison of global performance between RFP devices.
4) Localization of RFX-mod performance in fusion parameter space
Data validation and scaling group mission
RFX-mod Programme Workshop 2009 – 20-22 January 2009
RFX-mod 2008 scalings: examples
In most cases scaling are obtained from “private ” databases or build-up for a given project/conference:
(see i.e. Innocente RFP-WS08, PiovesanEPS08, LorenziniAPS08 …)

RFX-mod Programme Workshop 2009 – 20-22 January 2009
Work in progress : pulse file versions
Aims: pulse file with validated data possibility of modifications (calculated data
and calibrations, new data) and traceability
modified pulse files will work in the same way of the original ones a procedure has been developed to trace modifications to pulse
files, in order to guarantee that derived quantities are aligned with modifications
the new procedure allows retrieving and displaying of older versions.
versions of data are identified by their insertion dates (MDSPlus feature)
A specific database of modifications will support the pulse file versions management and traceability
RFX-mod Programme Workshop 2009 – 20-22 January 2009
pulse file modifications: next steps Some details for the version creation are going to be completed (i.e.
operational procedure (useradministrator), routines documentation in progress,...)
commissioning steps to be defined: Commissioning of the procedure on a limited and agreed
number of shots first campaign for pulse file updating ...
useful tools in progress with the aim of a better and easier usableness web visualization of the modifications and easy comparison with
the original signals web access of Traverser
a general presentation of the pulse file modification procedure will be organized soon (specific comments from users)
RFX-mod Programme Workshop 2009 – 20-22 January 2009
Pohm estimateAn example of possible application of the new tool provided by the pulse file version is given by the estimate of the confinement parameter.work is in progress in order to evaluate such modifications: Include the measured Te profile in the calculation of the poloidal beta
study of transients can play a major role in the present RFX-mod operations (i.e. QSH transition …).Time evolution of confinement parameter estimate would be useful and work is in progress on
the account for time evolution of pressure profiles evaluation of pohm with improved time resolution
RFX-mod Programme Workshop 2009 – 20-22 January 2009
Summary database Public database: automatic daily procedure for adding data in
the various tables from the pulse file Default not validated data Some tables are manually filled (ex. ‘confinement’,
’spectroscopy’…)
Summary database documentation: available on intranet page
http://intranet.igi.cnr.it/servizi_tecnici/servizio_calcolo/software/Dblib/dblib.htm
Self documented tables through routines (IDL, …)
Useful tool: the validation procedure should be extended (see next slides)
RFX-mod Programme Workshop 2009 – 20-22 January 2009
RFX-mod plasma parameters explored in 2008
Average parameters in the flat-top (source: summary database)
RFX-mod Programme Workshop 2009 – 20-22 January 2009
Future plans/proposals: documentation
update of documentation of the online post processing programs
a documentation of control algorithms is proposed
pulsefile (version traceability, routines, web tools…)
Encourage the easy and accessible description of diagnostics
RFX-mod Programme Workshop 2009 – 20-22 January 2009
Data validation proposals
cross-validation, comparison of same parameter from different diagnostics: ne (TS, Interferometer,GPI,probes), Te (in
different radial position)...
Validation status: flags on signals/data (default unchecked) in order to obtain a database of marked shots
(with checked and useful data) avoiding duplication of validation procedure
RFX-mod Programme Workshop 2009 – 20-22 January 2009
Future plans/proposals: database collection
Verification of the existing database and not covered regions Selected shots for a continuous database
highlight of suitable shots periodically (for example each week) several information for a limited number of shots Including a subset of validated parameters
Selection of important parameters, i.e. for confinement estimate several diagnostics and people have to be involved (including also the same information from different diagnostics)
Parameter set including ex. profiles, tomographic reconstruction, magnetic boundary information...
Times: time average on given time window, trigger events (significant time instants), ex. confinement estimate during transients…)
Proposal of periodic scan series at the state of art of the discharge performance and setting up
Main aim: selected good RFX pulses under given condition and fully diagnosed
RFX-mod Programme Workshop 2009 – 20-22 January 2009
database development and maintenance
Verification of the existing database
periodic scan series at the state of art
continuous database
RFX-mod Programme Workshop 2009 – 20-22 January 2009
Future plans/proposals: scaling
Scaling for perspectives of RFX/RFP (projections)
Scaling on selected particular states detected in RFX-mod (QSH, SHAx …)
Comparison between different configurations obtained in RFX-mod (RFP, tokamak, ULq)
Comparison with others RFPs (MST, Extrap-T2R, RELAX)
