1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS

Point line, plane is basically expoloring the tectonics on the ground, and mass is about soild and void below the ground, while frame and infill is more about above the ground. These 3 are indicating different interaction with earth and to explore realtionship with earth in a different aspect. The cobined used of them to create a space would be interesting as the whole desi gn would be interacted with the earth, but in different aspect, and in result to create different effect to make a design more meaningful.

1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE

Using the different triangular planes to create spaces which are separated and intersected, is to represent my idea of creating a space like a labyrinth that blocks people’s view to some extent and intentionally makes people feel confused. The planes are indicated by the horizontal-laying flat plane, the lines are the edge of the triangles, and the points are indicated by the tip of the triangle. And the way I place them illustrates how the slope works to show the progression of from point to line then to plane, as well as the relationship between the planes and the ground.

1.2 MASS

In this dome-like struture, the light would only go through from the top and the entrance. This leads to the gradient of the light, which arises users’ curiousity and encourage them to circulate in the mass to explore where the light comes. However, the interior of it consists of labyrinth-feeling planes, some people would just go into darker space while some of the people would be able to go to the center of the mass and feel the joy of getting the light, this is an analogy of human society that some of the people can get rid of darkness through their expolration and effort while others just bumped into endless darkness and depression.

1.3 FRAME & INFILL

From my design, the idea I want to explore is how the infill help express the frame that people can easily notice and distinguish them. In my model, I create a frame first and then insert infill, namely the colored panel, that help expressed the frame to a large extent, also inspired by the precedent, the eames house. Also, the intersected volume attached to the frame on the front act as another infill to express this cubic frame. In this case, the frame is prior to the structure, and the usage of translucent panel also indicated that they won’t hide the frame behind. The usage of color, transparency as well as anti-gravity that you can viewed it in differenr perspective while it still makes sense is expressed in this model.

2.1 SITE ANALYSIS AND CONCEPTACLE

Herring Island is a small 3.2 hectares artificial island located in Melbourne’s Yarra River at South Yarra, approxi ately 3 kilometres from the city centre. It is the only island in the Yarra River, which is accessible only by boat. This makes the site itself a secret place to some extent that it has limited accessibility, through the specific entry. Therefore, the site I choose on the island is based on the following factors, which influenced by the island’s compostion, location and urban context around it, including circulation, noise level, vegetation and topography. To responding to the brief, I tend to choose a site which is far away from the human hotspot that people are inclined to visit, including the scupltures as well as the gallery, and in this case, smallest noise is required. Moreover, I choose a site that is sunk and has the most dense vegetation that could help concealed the building in a way, to keep the secret.

2.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN

Secret, when people find nowhere to share the secret they will tend to find somewhere objective to spe ak out, as people in the ancient time, speaking to the tree holes. Hence, the intention for me is to create space for people to record their secret and then the secret will automatically deleted it at once.My concept in the previous design highlights the circulation and create things like labyrinth feeling, so this conceptacle is a abstraciton of labyrinth. This can be illustrated in the model that people cannot see each other clearly, if in the model, as it would be hide or concealed by the component in the structure, which is using the idea of spilt level. And in this case, i tend to make use of the topography, slopes and levels, rather than stair case to achieve the spilt level.

2.3 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

The conceptacle is a metaphor of human concealing their secret in a much enclosure area. While during the development, I intentionally unfold the cubic, from a volume to serveral surfaces or planes, and to seperated them, which is analogy like people want to hide their secret, but I in tend to ‘‘unfold’’ and ‘‘exposure’’ their secret and encourage people to speak out their secrets in this certain semi-private sapce.

3.0 REFLECTION

During the w hole deign process, there are serveral aspects that insipred me a lot. First of all, is that the relationship with the earth can totally change the user experience and feeling in the design, which I never think of it before. From now on, when I want to design something, except for the form , I would consider more about the realtionship between the design and earth ,in order to response to particualr usesr experience I tend to offer my users. Secondly, I understand that deisgn is never perfect, refining is endless. From the progress of the subject, we did our PLP, Mass, Frame and infill study in the previous section, but we could still refine it until the end of sememster and it suprisingly works in this way. This refer to that I find myself have a deeper understanding of them and when I refine my idea, it’s less struggling and the result is better obviously. Thridly, the love-hate thing I experienced in this subject, is the consistency of the design, from precedent to concept, from concept to development, from development to final deisgn. At first, I find this is not quite workable on my process of forming a idea, however, as I urge myself to follow these steps, I find myself more rational in the design, and everything just seems to make more sense than randomly popped up on the paper. Lastly, the time managment will still be my huge challenge to deal with that I always think that if i get more time i could do the work better, and which is due to my lack consious of managing time.
