Mechanical Sensing System
• Goals for project– Conduct initial literature review– Select an appropriate distance sensor and a
pressure sensor to interface with a system– Use LabVIEW to measure the signals from the
sensors and display on a computer
Literature Review
• How to use sensors for distance measurement: http://www.waset.org/journals/waset/v51/v51-51.pdf
• How to use sensors for pressure measurement: http://www.emant.com/250001.page
Mechanical Sensor System Base
• Borrowed base from the Nanofab laboratory
• Displacement Sensor will attach a cylinder
• Pressure sensing pad will be located under the cylinder
Uses for project
• Assembly line worker• Robotics research• Automated stamper• Robot that can type on a keyboard• Research ways to incorporate sensors to any
mechanical system
SICK Displacement sensor
Model name: SICK DT10 Type: Red LED Sensor• https://impurchasing.mysick.com/partner
Portal/TopFrameset.aspx?lefttarget=../ProductCatalog/Leftnav.aspx%3Fcategory=Produktfinder&righttarget=../ProductCatalog/Datasheet.aspx%3FProductID=41543
• 50 mm to 500 mm range• 3 mm resolution• Analog output, Cable interface• 2m Cable costs $50• Need to put wires onto a DAQ, which
plugs in via USB to a computer• Works with NI DAQ:
http://sine.ni.com/np/app/main/p/ap/daq/lang/en/pg/1/sn/n17:daq,n36:18/
• $359• Needs a power supply (on-off switch)
Keyence Laser distance sensor
Model name: Keyence IL-100 Type: Laser• http://www.keyence.com/p
roducts/sensors/laser/il/il_specifications_1.php?style=print
• $1,490• $299 RS-232 adapter OR• 4-20mA or -5 to 5V outputs
Force Imaging Array from UneoTech
• http://www.uneotech.com/ucctw/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&layout=item&id=173&Itemid=147&lang=en
• $10,000• Comes with sensor pad,
electronics controller, and software
Pressure Sensing Sheet from Sensible UI
• http://www.sensibleui.com/buy
• Initial Resolution: 4.5mm
• $399.00• USB interface with
computer• Sold out!!!
Data Acquisition Board
• http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/208789
• NI 9219• $ 926.10• Need to make sure one
or both sensors are compatible with the DAQ
Distance Sensor Interfaces
SICK DT10 • Has an analog voltage or
current that can be plugged into the DAQ
• Must buy a DAQ that costs around $1000
• Total price: ~$1300• Resolution of 3mm• Cheaper, but less resolution
Keyence IL-100• Has an option to have an
RS-232 adapter, eliminating the need for a DAQ
• Total price: ~$1789• Resolution of 0.004 mm• More expensive, but much
better resolution
ProductsProduct Name Tolerances Range Interfaces Price
SICK DT10 3 mm to 5 mm 50 to 500 mm Analog current $389
Keyence IL-100 0.004 mm 75 to 130 mm RS-232 $1789
SICK OD2 0.075 mm 100 to 400 mm Analog current $1000
Product Name Tolerances & Resolution
Dimensions Interfaces Price
Inventables Pressure-Sensing Sheet
5 to 25%, 20g to 10 kg
Customizable, 8” by 8” preferred
Analog resistance
$133.25
Tekscan 3200 Unspecified,0 to 100 psi
6.6” by 6.6” Pressure distribution map software included
$15,000… too expensive!
Sensible UI Unspecified,4.5mm spatial resolution
7.87” by 7.4” USB $399
Distance Sensors
Pressure Sensors
Recommended choices
• Displacement sensor: SICK DT10, $389. Reasons:– Reasonable resolution (3 mm)– Interfaces with DAQ via wires and analog current– DAQ can be used with other sensors
• Pressure sensor: SensibleUI, $399. However, currently sold out and need to wait to order.
• Reasons:– Other sensors are >$5k or are not interfacable/don’t
show a pressure distribution
Other goals
• Order the pressure sensor• Create a contour plot of force generated from
the pressure sensor• Actuate the mechanical system and control it
via LabVIEW• Create publication
