WHAT ARE NATURAL CALAMITIES?

Natural Calamities are the effect of various natural hazard that:

affects the environment and leads to financial, environmental and/or

human losses.

The loss arising from it is greater where density of population is higher.

TYPES OF NATURAL CALAMITIES

Earthquake Floods Tornado Hurricane Volcanic Eruption Landslides

EARTHQUAKE

Earthquake is the shaking and vibration of the earth’s surface usually triggered by underground stress along fault lines.

FLOODSFloods are caused by overflow of water on land that are usually dry.

HURRICANEHurricane are large tropical storm with heavy winds. They contain winds of more than 74 miles per hour and heavy rainfall.

LANDSLIDES

Landslide occur when masses of rock or debris move down the slope.

TORNADO

Tornado is a violently rotating column of air extending, between and in contact with cloud and surface of the earth.

VOLCANIC ERUPTION

Volcanic eruption is the spurting out of gases and hot lava from an opening in the earth’s crust.

REMEDIES AGAINST NATURAL CALAMITIESEARTHQUAKE Constructing Earthquake proof structures. Go to open places . Drop down and take cover. FLOODS Building Dams. Placing sandbags along the river bank to serve as levees and placing large rocks. Strictly ban tree cutting. Forest cultivation on war footing.

HURRICANE First aid kit. Seal your doors and windows. If u living in coastal areas than immediately evacuate the area if weather worsens. Don’t park your vehicles under trees.

TORNADO Take cover in underground shelter. Seal your doors and windows. If possible leave the area.

LANDSLIDING Plant trees on hilly and mountainous areas. Immediately leave the area where land sliding occurred. Ban tree cutting.

VOLCANIC ERUPTION Move towards a safe place. If ash fall occur, cover your nose with wet cloth.

CONCLUSIONThe effect of natural calamities has been made worse by men’s activities on earth. Despite the fact that natural calamities can’t be avoided, but steps should be taken to minimize the loss of life and property.
