Air Pollution: Natural Causes

Air Pollution: Man-Made Causes

The Back Story on Air Pollution

• Over 90% of transportation fuel is petroleumbased.

• 50% of fuel combustion emissions are NitrogenOxides (NOx).

• NOx is the primary cause of visual air pollutionand acid rain.

Understanding Nitrogen Oxides

NOx includes Nitric Oxides (NO) and Nitrogen Dioxides

(NO2) – with NO2 being particularly dangerous due toits:

• Adverse effects on human respiratory systems

• Role as a precursor to tropospheric ozone andparticulate matter

From the Vehicles We Drive…to the Air We Breathe

7

How Ozone Forms

As NOx Mixes with Air and Sun,Dreaded Ground Level Ozone and

Other Damaging Pollutants are Formed.

What Does this Mean to All of Us…

and to Our Grandchildren?

• In 2014, the World Health Organization estimated 7million premature deaths worldwide due to air pollution.

• An MIT study estimated 200,000 premature deaths in theU.S. each year due to air pollution.

• The International Energy Agency estimates China’ssmog is reducing life expectancy by 25 months.

The Health Costs of Pollution

11

The Monetary Costs of Pollution

• The World Bank estimates air pollution is costingthe world economy more then $5 trillion annuallyin welfare costs.

• The International Energy Agency estimatesadditional costs in life-saving innovations as:

– $2.3 trillion for advanced pollution controls in vehicles

– $2.5 trillion for advances in the energy sector

The Science BehindPhotocatalytic Reactions

The use of Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) as aphotocatalyst was discovered in 1972.

• When exposed to UV light, TiO2 creates hydroxylradicals and superoxides.

• These intermediates then oxidize to reduce NOx, whichoxidizes into water-soluble nitrates that are washed wayby rainfall.
