Registration Guide for BSc Students - 2019/ 2020
Programme Duration
The BSc in Electrical and Computer Engineering programme is a 3-year programme with the option
to extend to 4 years, and within a maximum duration of 14 semesters. Faculty of Engineering
Undergraduate Regulations restrict Honours awards to students who complete the programme in 8
semesters or less.
Graduation Requirements A minimum of ninety three (93) credits is required to graduate with a BSc in Electrical and
Computer Engineering, regardless of the date of entry. All compulsory courses, worth a total of 72
credits, must be passed in order to graduate. The additional 21 credits are selected from the available
Level 3 elective courses which must constitute a Thematic Option.
Registration Restrictions
Students are obliged to ensure that the courses for which they are registered are in accordance with
the Regulations of the Faculty of Engineering and to note the following registration restrictions:
New Level 1 entry students and 2014/ 2015 entrants onwards are required to register under the
'S01' code;
Pre 2014/ 2015 Continuing and Re-entry students are required to register under the 'ENC' code;
Students registering for approved postgraduate courses are required to register under the 'S02'
code
Where they exist, pre-requisite courses must be passed before registering for 'follow on'
courses; the pre-requisite sequencing of courses by semester is shown in Figure 1 on page 4;
Students are not normally allowed to register for any Level 3 course while trailing a
Level 1 course;
University Regulations restrict the maximum course load to 18 credits (examinable), and a
minimum of 9 credits, per semester.

Course Registration
Are students required to re-register for any courses?
Students must register for all trailing courses in the first instance.
How should the registration of credits for the year-long Special Project (ECNG 3020) course
be treated?
ECNG 3020 appears on the Banner transcript as a 6-credit course in Semester II. For the purpose
of registration, ECNG 3020 may be calculated as a 3 credit (non-examinable) course in the
Semester I and 3-credit (examinable) course in Semester II. Students are required to first register
for REGS1000 in Semester I and then register for ECNG 3020 (year-long).
ECNG 3020 registrants may apply online for a maximum credit override where course credits in
Semester II exceed the 18-credit maximum allowance.
Are students permitted to register for out-of-faculty courses? Final year students who require up to six credits may seek permission from the Head of Department
to complete the degree requirements in their final semester.
Faculty Overrides and Dean's holds
What is the process for applying for a Faculty Override or removing a Dean's hold?
Complete an application form; where applicable, obtain signed clearance from the
Undergraduate Course Lecturer and Postgraduate Coordinator as well as the Head of
Department; present form to Administrative Assistant to process.
Summer Programme
Is Summer School counted as a Semester?
Summer School is a remedial programme for repeaters only. Summer is not treated as a semester;
it is therefore not treated as a semester for the purpose of determining a student’s status on Warning
or Required to Withdraw; however, the Term GPA is factored into the Weighted GPA.
If a student on Required to Withdraw (RTW) status (at the end of Semester II) attains a
minimum GPA (Grade Point Average) of 2.00 in the Summer Programme, can the student be
reinstated in the following Semester I?
According to the Faculty’s Regulations ... “Summer School will not normally be used to positively or
negatively change the status of any student."

Special Project (ECNG 3020)
Special Project (ECNG 3020), compulsory in Level 3, carries 20% of the final weighted GPA.
Students are strongly advised to engage in projects consistent with their chosen options (refer to
ECNG 3020 Course Manual).
Thematic Options
Thematic Options are chosen in accordance with the Level 3 Thematic Courses indicated in Table
1. Students are required to declare at least one (1) option, must register for, and pass all
mandatory courses in that Thematic Option to satisfy the requirements to graduate.

Grade Point Average
The class of degree is awarded on the basis of a Weighted Grade Point Average (GPA), calculated as
follows:

In the Faculty of Engineering, the Final Year project contributes 20% to the Weighted GPA calculation
used to determine the class of degree. Once the Final Year project is attempted, the weighted average is
determined as follows:

Note in particular the 1, 3, 6 weighting of Levels 1, 2 and 3 courses; the penalty paid for multiple
attempts at any course, particularly the Special Project (ECNG 3020).

Students are urged to pay particular attention to the pre-requisite sequencing of courses in Figure 1 on
page 5 as failures in pre-requisite courses typically results in delays in progression through the
programme.
