Regional Studies Association

Annual President’s Event 2014

The Doyle Bloomsbury Hotel

Thursday, 27th November 2014

Ceremony marking the opening of the Regional Studies Association China Division, September 2014

Welcome, We are delighted to offer you a very warm welcome to this year’s President’s Event. This year of course we are without our President. Professor Sir Peter Hall, our inaugural President and a founder member of the Association sadly passed away in the Summer but we will be remembering him tonight when our guest speaker, Professor Nick Phelps presents a tribute to him and to his contribution. Tonight we will also be running our annual awards ceremony recognising excellence in our field. We pass our congratulations to all those who have been honoured this year and especially to those who will receive their award this evening. The Association has had a busy year.

We have opened an RSA Chinese Division with a project office in the Chinese Academy of Sciences. There was the auspicious number of 66 new members at the opening ceremony which was attended by the Chair and Chief Executive in September

In 2015, the Association will launch two new grant schemes aimed at its individual and fellowship members to complement its Early Career Grant scheme which has awarded over £240,000 to 24 emerging scholars

The new gold open access journal Regional Studies, Regional Science was successfully launched and its 27 articles will have attracted more than 17,000 downloads in 12 months

Territory, Politics, Governance has been accepted by Thomson Reuters for early consideration for inclusion in the Web of Science. Inclusion gives an impact factor

At our largest DG Regio/Committee of the Regions/DG Emploi Open Days European Week for Regions and Cities organized for European policy makers and practitioners, more than 1000 people attended the four RSA hosted University sessions plus the Early Career

Master Class on Cohesion Policy

In December 2013, the Association’s inaugural USA conference in UCLA, Los Angeles was hailed a great success and the Winter conference 2014, is the biggest in our history

Membership has risen to its highest ever level and is more international and more evenly spread across career stage than in the past

As ever, we remind you that any Association can only be as good as its members are active. Do continue to engage with us. Tell us what you would like to do and challenge us to offer more. All best wishes, Andrew Beer Sally Hardy Chair Chief Executive
