Cold War

A competition or a rivalry between Communism (USSR) and Democracy (U.S.)

Truman Doctrine of Containment

To stop communism from spreading. Keep it to where it already exists.

Marshall Plan

Gave aid to Western Europe to help them rebuild after World War II.

Space Race

Soviets first in space (Sputnik 1957)Kennedy’s goal was to have a man on the

moon by the end of the 1960s.1969 – Neil Armstrong walked on the

moon.Space program cost 24 billion dollarsPart of the Cold War because we are

competing to see who gets to space first.

Arms Race

1945 U.S. uses first nuclear weapons.1949 Soviets develop their own weaponsU.S. uses as a deterrent to prevent the

Korea

Communist North Korea invaded non-Communist South Korea (38th parallel).

1950-1953 the war is fought. First U.N. military action.

Vietnam

Communist North Vietnam invades Non-Communist South.

Gulf of Tonkin ResolutionPart of the Cold War because concerned

about Domino Theory.

Cuban Missile Crisis

Soviets place missiles in Cuba aimed at the U.S. Cuba is 90 miles from Florida. President Kennedy blockades Cuba. U.S. agrees to take missiles out of Turkey if Soviets remove missiles from Cuba.

Part of the Cold War because it is the closest we came to nuclear war.

McCarthyism

Joseph McCarthy was a senator from Wisconsin. He accused people in the State Department of being communist. NO evidence.

Part of the Cold War because he played on people’s fear of Communism.

NATO

Military alliance for Western Europe to stop the spread of Communism.

It is a unified army, navy and air force under the leadership of one allied commander.

26 Member nations

WARSAW

Military alliance set up by Eastern Europe and the USSR to stop Western aggression.

Unified army, navy and air force under the leadership of the USSR.

Common Market

European trade union. It eliminates tariffs, if you trade with other member nations.

Meant to encourage trade in Western Europe.

Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Britain are all members (these are only a few).

United Nations

International Peace keeping organization. Also, protects human rights.

Made up of the General Assembly and the Security Council (there are other parts, but these are the most important).
