A little about Youth Court….

Youth Court is a family court diversion program aimed at reducing the amount of juvenile delinquency in the city/county of Oswego.

A trial by peers process for first time offenders between the ages of seven and less than sixteen(will consider up to 18 yrs old if attending school). 2nd time offenders will be considered on a case by case basis.

Offender must admit guilt.Violation and misdemeanor offenses accepted.

Felony cases will be considered on case by case basis.

Oswego City/County Youth Court

Offenses dealt with commonly include:

Aggravated Harassment 240.30 Criminal Mischief 4th 145.00 Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 5th 165.40 Endangering the Welfare of a Child 260.10 Falsely Reporting an Incident 3rd 240.50 Harassment 2nd 240.26 Petit Larceny 155.25 Trespass 140.05 Unauthorized Use of Motor Vehicle 165.05 Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 221.05

****This list is not inclusive, other offenses will be accepted****

How to refer to Youth Court

Complete Youth Court appearance ticket (give white copy to parent, yellow copy gets sent to court and bottom kept for officer)

Supporting documentation/police report (also include any victim and/or offender statements). The more information the better.

Send ticket and information to the Youth Court

What happens to cases that are referred t o Youth Court?

Meeting is set with parent and offender

Parent and Arresting Officer

CASES NOT COMPLETE WILL BE RETURNED TO ARRESTING OFFICER FOR FURTHER ACTION DEEMED NECESSARY

Aside from Volunteering for Youth Court

Volunteer Efforts

In 2011 the Youth Court program

provided over 3100 hours of volunteer

service to the Oswego County

Community.

Those hours were served by the Youth

Court members, offenders, and

program volunteers.

Benefits to Law Enforcement & the Community

Gives Law Enforcement another avenue for first time offenders (and some 2nd time offenders)

Gives youths a chance to change behaviors and become more productive

Is a learning experience for both members and offenders

Youth Court members can share positive experiences which in turn can have positive effect on other youths
