Polypipe from roof to re-use
The more we build, the greater the strain we put on drinking water supplies. As experts in water management for residential, commercial and infrastructure construction, Polypipe have the systems and knowledge to incorporate rain water harvesting as an integral part of what we are building.
Polypipe Rainstream represents one of the most innovative holistic rainwater harvesting systems,
delivering a range of highly effective solutions for the storage, filtration and reuse of rainwater in
todays commercial buildings.
With water becoming more scarce, an increase in hosepipe bans, reduced crop yields and failing
emergency supplies, the need to take better care of the drinking water we have has never been
more crucial. Polypipe Rainstream enables buildings to reduce their reliance on valuable potable water
supplies for applications such as toilet flushing, vehicle washing and irrigation where the use of drinking
water is simply not neccesary.

The Importance of Water Re-use and Legislation
National water levels Water supplies in England and Wales are much lower
than is commonly thought, despite high levels of
rainfall. This is because more and more rainfall falls on
to roofs, hardstanding areas and roads running into
the drainage network rather than replenishing
reservoirs and aquifers. In fact, we have less usable
water than perceived drier countries such as France
and Spain.
• England and Wales: 1,334 cubic metres of rainfall
per person
• France: 3,065 cubic metres of rainfall per person
• Spain: 2,785 cubic metres of rainfall per person
Water stress and water conservation Water stress is calculated for each water company
area using a formula that combines current and future
demand, current and future water availability and
forecast population growth.
The broad picture for England and Wales is shown
opposite, although it does not reflect security of supply
or water authority performance. In Scotland, although
rainfall is higher, much of it falls in unpopulated rural
areas. This means Scotland’s cities can be just as
susceptible to water stress as any other part of the UK.
Conserving water in today’s buildings really matters. Water supplies in the UK are under more sustained pressure today than at any other time.
A combination of population growth, the increased use of potable water
where it isn’t essential (for bathing, showering, watering gardens and flushing
toilets) and prolonged periods of drought all pose a very real threat to the
continued supply of clean water to everyone who needs it.

British Standard BS 8515:2009 Parts 1 & 2The definitive guide to standards in rainwater
harvesting. British Standard BS 8515:2009 gives
guidance on the design, installation, testing and
maintenance of rainwater harvesting systems for
all uses excluding human consumption. This includes
laundry, WC flushing and garden watering.
The Code for Sustainable HomesThe code sets targets for reducing the consumption of
potable mains water from its current average
level of 150 litres per person per day, to 80 litres. Code
credits are awarded on a graded scale,
from 1 (worst) to 6 (best).
BREEAMThe Building Research Establishment Environmental
Assessment Method (BREEAM) is now recognised as
the standard measure of sustainable building
design. It addresses environmental and sustainability
issues and enables developers to prove the
environmental credentials of their buildings to
planners and clients.
Building Regulations Approved Document H This important document places rainwater
harvesting at the top of a hierarchy of measures for
managing surface water in building development.
Following its recommendations not only helps to
reduce the pressure on drainage networks, but
provides the means to significantly reduce potable
water use too.

Where we waste water Although all water that is supplied through the mains is potable, only about 5% is actually used for drinking or cooking.
On average a non-domestic building uses approximately 2,600 litres a day, with up to 80% of the water delivered for non-
potable applications such as toilet flushing. Much of this could be provided by harvested rainwater.

The flexible nature of the Polypipe Rainstream approach to rainwater re-use means that no two systems are ever
the same, as each one is designed to meet the specific requirements of an individual application. However, a number
of elements are common to many types of system and the operating principles are largely standard throughout.
Rainwater falling onto roofs can be collected by a
variety of means including guttering, channel
drainage and specialized roof drain systems (Terrain
Hydromax Siphonic Roof Drainage)
Pre-tank filtration then removes any larger debris
such as leaves, before the collected water passes to
the storage tank. Please note that filters can be
either mounted internally or externally to
the storage tank
The storage vessel is typically a large tank which
can be included within a building, surface
mounted externally or buried below ground.
Captured water is re-distributed with a floating
filter pump assembly.

It’s estimated each person in the UK uses as much as 50% more water today than they did 25 years ago.As almost 80% of the water we use is for non-potable purposes, rainwater harvesting is the single most effectiveway to reduce consumption and preserve resources.
Polypipe’s holistic solutions and range of products provide a practical and sustainable
method for easing water stress by capturing rainwater from roof areas before filtering
and storing it for re-use.

DISINFECT
The first stage of any rainwater harvesting system is water capture, ie the process of
channeling raintwater from roofs via building drainage into storage vessels.
Utilising traditional or siphonic drainage systems, Polypipe Terrain offer a complete range of solutions for the capture
of rain water.
Capture
Terrain HydroMax siphonic drainage system The Terrain HydroMax siphonic rainwater drainage
system is designed to rapidly remove large volumes
of water typically deposited during extreme rainfall
events. Designed to run at full bore, the pipe
effectively ‘sucks’ the water from the roof area,
utilising smaller pipe diameters than traditional
gravity systems, whilst also significantly reducing the
number of both roof outlets and downpipes required.
9
Polypipe Terrain offers a number of systems for in line and other methods of filtration to
ensure rainwater meets the required standards prior to storage.
Even though it is not intended for human consumption, water for re-use is required
to go through a degree of filtration and disinfection. The first stage of this process is
carried out by filtration systems positioned between water capture and water storage
structures which serve to screen out leaves, insects, silt and other impurities.
A range of practical, efficient water storage solutions that retain non-potable
water for washing, irrigation, toilet flushing and other uses. As well as saving
water, they save space by storing water in underground structures and systems
or in discreet spaces within commercial premises.
Storage
Ridgistorm-XL: A high volume tanking solution made
from capped lengths of our proven large-scale
Ridgistorm-XL piping. Rainstream RXL offers all the
benefits of bespoke design and off-site fabrication,
allowing transportation of separate components that
can be assembled quickly and easily on-site using
electro-fusion jointing.
Biomaster® Anti-microbial Technology: Rainstream RXL incorporates an anti-bacterial lining that
prevents the development of bacterial colonies on the tank wall and stops microorganisms reproducing by
interrupting DNA and cell division. This helps reduce the risk of contamination and maintains water quality.
Filter

Titanium Advanced Oxidisation This advanced process combines UV light and a titanium dioxide lining
to produce Hydroxyl radicals. Extremely effective against all micro-
organisms, these compounds break down cells at a molecular level,
leaving no residue and producing water of exceptional cleanliness and
quality. Titanium Advanced Oxidisation has the added advantage
of being a low maintenance, chemical free solution.

Filter
Once filtered and treated, harvested water can be used
in a wide range of applications including toilet and
urinal flushing, laundry, vehicle washing and irrigation to
save valuable water resources and reduce utility costs.
Toilet and Urinal Flushing: Even low volume flush toilets
use 4 litres of water every time the handle is pressed.
Rainwater harvesting stops precious water being wasted
in this way.
Laundry: Up to 20 litres of water can be used in a warm
wash. Or, to put it another way, up to 20 litres can be
saved by using harvested rainwater.
Irrigation: Storing and using water for irrigation helps
save valuable drinking water while preserving public
parks and private gardens.
Harvested rainwater can be used in a number of non potable applications as detailed below, potentially reducing mains water usage by up to 80%.
