PRELIMS

Let’s start off with the quiz the way Zaheer did in the 2003 World Cup Final.

By picking up an Oscar nomination for Best Picture last year, Moneyball became the third baseball movie to do so.

Baseball is now tied second in the list of sports which have movies based on them nominated for the top prize by The Academy.

Quite simply, which sport tops the list?

1

X, one of the most decorated players in his sport, is nicknamed ‘Foetus.’ Since the international body of the sport started handing out Player of the Year awards in 1998, he has won it four times, a record for the men.

In addition to that, he has an Olympic Gold to go with his two bronzes. Two silvers and a gold from the World Cups if he gets tired of his Olympic medals.

Who is this legend of sport?

2

Identify the two sides playing. 3

The BAMBI awards  are presented annually by Hubert Burda Media to recognise excellence in international media and television "with vision and creativity who affected and inspired the German public that year,“ both domestic and foreign. First held in 1948, they are the oldest media awards in Germany.

Franz Beckenbauer has won the award five times. Other notable winners are Sophia Loren(nine time winner), Celine Dion, Christoph Waltz and Georgio Armani.

X, hailing from one of Germany’s neighbouring countries, was a man who was adored by the public last year. He, along with a host of other rubbish names(Bieber, One Direction) won a BAMBI last year.

The BAMBI jury awarded the award to X in the ‘Millenium’ category. Explaining its decision, it said, “X has not only broken three world records  but also created a global media event that fascinated all generations on an unprecedented scale.”

Who was this media darling of 2012?

After the incident that shot X to fame, X began the life of a celebrity. X starred in a feature film, The Spy with the Cold Nose, and appeared on Magpie, Blue Peter and many other TV shows. He was made _____of the Year, awarded a year's free supply of food and there were offers to visit Chile, Czechoslovakia and Germany.

After a few years, however X’s luck ran out. X was found hanging from the branch of a tree. Corbett, an ‘accomplice’, buried X in the back garden of the house in Lingfield, Surrey, that the ‘incident ‘ money had bought.

Who is X? And how is X embedded in sporting history?

Shown below(and in the next slide) is a rather wonderful looking lady with her fella’s face blanked out. This lady is the daughter of a pretty popular (or unpopular, depending on how you look at it) football club president. The fella was actually a player of the club until very recently. His departure has sent the country’s gossip column writers into working overtime. Everyone wants to know how the couple is going to maintain their relationship now.

Tell me who the fella is. And who this wonderful lady’s father is.

The moniker for holes 11,12 and 13 of the Augusta National Golf Club was given by Herbert Warren Wind in a Sports Illustrated article in 1958. That was the Masters where Arnold Palmer earned his first major championship with the help of a ruling that, even decades later, runner-up Ken Venturi was still challenging.

The ruling allowed Palmer to exploit a rule, the interpretation of which was poor, that, in effect, Palmer was allowed to play the ball twice but counted as once. This was due to a heavy night’s rain in Augusta the night before. Palmer went on to win the Masters in spectacular fashion.

Wind’s inspiration, apparently, came from a jazz record titled “Shouting at the____”.

The rules say that those applying for citizenship to this country must have lived in the country for five years with absences of no more than 450 days, including three months within the past year.

Now, the guy, X, had tried for 15 years to gain citizenship to the country only to be denied it because he flouted the aforementioned rule repeatedly owing to the nature of his profession.

A rather momentous achievement, sometime in the mid-noughties, caused the country’s erstwhile Home Secretary, Charles Clarke, to intervene and fasten the process.

A Home Office spokesman said Mr Clarke had used discretionary powers to review the case, and "it was decided X deserved to be granted citizenship".

So, who is this X person?

As part of its Golden Jubilee celebrations, the CCI assembled a CCI XI, sometime in 1987-88, to play a match against a Pakistan XI captained by none other than Imran Khan. The CCI team comprised stalwarts such as Mohammed Azharuddin and Roger Binny amongst their ranks.

The match was not an official international match. In fact, on the day of the game a couple of Pakistani players decided to spend the day in bed rather than play. The Pakistani team asked a couple of CCI youngsters to field instead. The erstwhile Mumbai U-19 captain, Kushroo Vasania, and X were asked to step in.

Rather interesting because X would go on to earn caps for India later.

Who is this future Indian Test player?

A senator Marco Rubio from Florida introduced a bill in the US Congress sometime in July of 2012. Speaking about the matter he said that he felt that his country’s athletes are being ‘effectively punished’. He said that the matter is an example of the "madness" of the US tax system, which he called a "complicated and burdensome mess".

A picture of the bill is shown in the next slide. Just tell me what Mr Rubio is so pissed about.

12

The title X is the unofficial and usual name given to the ‘Maillot à pois rouge’ wearer in a cycling road race. It is considered to be a very prestigious title even though the colour of the jersey suggests otherwise.

Past Tour de France winners of the title include Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault.

The 2012 Tour de France winner was the Frenchman Thomas Voeckler.

What is the title?

14

The word X coming from Seljord dialect of the Norwegian word for “slightly inclining hillside and track after skis” is usually suffixed to the names of existing sports to give a variation of that sport.

One of the variations was even an Olympic sport at 2012.

Good word please.

15

This sort of financial suicide has happened at the tournament just the three times, 1991, 1997 and 2004. On each occasion, seating has been made unreserved and readily available and tickets have been made inexpensive, thus, allowing those with limited means to access the tournament. Thus, the practice is known as___________.

The Arjuna Award for Boxing in 1966 was given to a man who was right in the middle of a streak which saw him win the National Championship in his weight category a record 11 times.

After retirement from his Army job, the Awardee did not lose his passion for his sport and went on a sojourn to kindle interest in the sport in his domicile state. He went from village to village scouting for talent and to persuade parents to send their wards to him for honing their talents.

So, what have this two time Asian Games gold medalist's post retirement efforts culminated in?

Shirt numbering customs in football say that the right back of a team should wear the no.2 jersey. And that the centre half/back wear the no.4 or 5 jersey.

Sergio Ramos adheres to the custom while playing for Real. However, ever since he was called up for the national side in 2008 he’s donned a seemingly odd shirt number, especially for a defensive player.

What is the reason for this oddity?

20

It started with San Francisco 49ers running back, Garrison Hearst way back in 1999. Barry Sanders, running back for the Detroit Lions, was next. The same year it happened to Dorsey Levens of the Green Bay Packers.

Peyton Hillis was eventually asked to leave his side, Cleveland Browns right after his breakthrough year with them in 2011 after it happened to him.

What happened to these gentlemen?

21

Since the IAAF started handing out the Athlete of the Year prizes in 1988, an American or a European has won either the male or the female prize every year barring one(2003) Predictably, both were Africans.

The male athlete, X has two Olympic Golds to his name, both coming at the same edition of the Olympics. In addition to his achievements as an athlete he won an award for humanitarian effort from the IAAF in 1996. Post retirement in 2006, X was appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. Today, he is an today an Ambassador for Peace and Sport, a Monaco-based international organization, as well as a member of its "Champions for Peace" club, a group of 54 famous elite athletes committed to serving peace in the world through sport.

The female athlete, Y, is a two time Olympic High Jump Silver medalist. She won Gold at the Paris World Championships, the major athletics event of 2003.
