2020 IS THE YEAR OF GRATITUDE AT WPS

____________________________________________________________________________

Issue 13 – 26 August 2020 Term 3 Week 6 SASS RECOGNITION WEEK I would most sincerely like to thank every member of the School Administrative and Support Staff (SASS) at Woodport for their hard work and commitment in support of the school, the students, the staff and the community. They work hard each day maintaining school grounds, organising notes and resources, printing, receipting money for excursions, attending to sick children, assisting learning in the classroom and playground along with a multitude of other responsibilities. This year in particular they have had to be increasingly flexible to adapt to changing scenarios and pandemic restrictions, highlighting the vital role they play in keeping the school running efficiently every day. They are truly a marvellous team who really do go above and beyond to help make Woodport such a wonderful school. They are dedicated, enthusiastic members of our staff who are highly valued.

Thank you Stuart Brown (GA), Kim King (Office), Mellissa Allen (Office), Jenni Bladwell (Office), Deb Walter (Office Manager), Amanda Pennington (SLSO/Office), Ingrid Yeo, Louise Dolan, Shane Annabel, Kylie Josephson, Lolita Saffy, Alex Talty, Megan Wyatt, Bree Besley and Rowen Shunmugan (SLSOs). You are all amazing! 3-6 SPORTS CARNIVAL We had beautiful weather last Friday for our 3-6 athletics carnival. Whilst it wasn’t at our usual venue we all certainly had a lot of fun with our modified carnival on the oval. Thank you to Mr Brown and Mr Rodgers for taking the time to methodically transform our oval into our very own athletics track. We were all very proud of the children and the way in which all competitors gave their best effort in their races and proudly cheered and supported their team mates. The oval was a sea of red, blue, green and yellow and many went to a lot of effort to dress creatively.

2020 IS THE YEAR OF GRATITUDE AT WPS

Unfortunately, due to recently announced restrictions the Southern Central Coast Zone carnival has been cancelled.

COVID-19 GUIDELINES UPDATE In line with current health advice, the NSW Department of Education has issued the following updated COVID-19 advice for families effective from Wednesday 19 August 2020.

• Parents/carers are reminded that students must not come to school if they are unwell – even if they have mild symptoms.

• Teachers should be vigilant in recognising if any students are exhibiting flu like symptoms during teaching and learning activities.

• Where identified, teachers must refer students to the sick bay where they can be isolated and the school must arrange for the parent or carer to take them home.

• If a student has been absent due to flu like illness or develops flu like symptoms while at school (even if mild), they are not to return to school until they have a negative COVID-19 test and are symptom free. The negative COVID-19 test result must be sighted and received by the school before his or her return to school.

• Please refer to the following document for further information. https://education.nsw.gov.au/covid19/advice-for-families#School2

Due to these new guidelines the following changes have occurred as a result:

• Kindy Start Program postponed until further notice • Book Week activities will continue with modifications made to organisation • Zone Athletics Carnival – cancelled for 2020 • Gala days – cancelled for 2020 • Choir activities have been placed on hold until further notice

The following are continuing to go ahead with adjustments in place:

• Environmental Education excursions • Sporting Schools activities • Life Education • Band program

Further advice regarding all other activities will come early Term 4. COMMUNITY AWARDS Each year the Department of Education, along with the Central Coast Council of Parents and Citizens’ Associations, the Central Coast Aboriginal Education Consultative Group, the Central Coast Secondary Principals’ Council and the Central Coast Primary Principals’ Association hold a public ceremony to recognise and thank the many supportive members of our school communities. Unfortunately due to COVID restrictions, regional public acknowledgement was not possible. This year Woodport Public School recognised and thanked Larissa Ware and Jaki Hamlin for their outstanding contributions to our school community and for their ongoing support. Both Larissa and Jaki have been regular volunteers in

all aspects of school life and active P&C members over the years. They were both instrumental in organising our two fabulous Olympathons, Blingo Night and many other fundraising ventures, sourcing donations whilst always trying to be innovative in their approach. Jaki for the past 3 years has taken on the role of dance coordinator of one of our dance groups, spending many hours choreographing and preparing our students for the dance festival. Larissa and Jaki have always been enthusiastic, positive, hard-working members of our school community. Their sense of fun is contagious. Today, at a staff morning tea they were presented with a Certificate of Appreciation. On behalf of our school community I would like to congratulate and thank Larissa and Jaki.

MURAL

2020 IS THE YEAR OF GRATITUDE AT WPS

We are very fortunate to have a beautiful new mural hanging proudly on our sport shed on the oval. A big thank you to Mrs Clayton for researching, designing and painting the masterpiece with the assistance of children on Ernie Rewards Day. Also, thanks to Mr Brown for preparing the boards, painting the shed, ensuring a wonderful backdrop for the art work and securing it to the shed. It certainly brings the playground to life. Inspiration for the design was drawn from the Darkinjung people whose diet was seasonal and consisted of a variety of seafood during the warmer months and land animals during cooler weather. In addition, plants and berries were consumed including yams, roots of some ferns and Burrawang Palm seeds (these can be seen in the artwork). Front and centre is the whale (the animal totem for this area) which holds significance not only to the Darkinjung but also to our community as Ernie the whale-boat is our school mascot. One side of the artwork looks more at the country - connections with land and one another, as well as paying tribute to the devastation of bushfire. The greenery on the opposite side acknowledges regeneration and life. The artwork aims to identify the historical and cultural importance of Darkinjung people, their relationship with this area – the land and its resources – and how our school community celebrates these connections. TELL THEM FROM ME PARENT SURVEY We gather feedback from students, staff and parents about our school in a number of ways including the Tell Them from Me surveys. We would appreciate parents completing this survey so we can validate the things we do and look at ways to continue to improve, as our school strives for excellence. This year anyone who completes the survey will go into the draw to win an Erina Leagues Club voucher. We will have one voucher per stage. As this survey is anonymous please inform your child’s teacher via Dojos or email the school that you have completed the survey so we can enter your name. Vouchers will be drawn on Friday 4 September. Good luck! We look forward to getting your feedback. Please click on the following link – http://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/woodport

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents Thank you so much to the families who have submitted their survey, we truly value and appreciate your feedback. STUDENTS LEAVING As we move into our planning phase for 2021, if you have a student at Woodport who is NOT in Year 6 and will not be returning to us next year, please let us know. The number of students at our school affects the planning for classes, teachers and school programs so the earlier we have information, the better. Please email the school or write a note to your child’s teacher. STUDENT SUPERVISION BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL Please be aware that the school’s supervision roster starts from 8:25am in the morning and students arriving before this time need to sit on the steps outside the hall and wait for the morning bell to ring. Please note there is NO teacher supervision prior to this time to ensure the safety of children in the playground and we request that parents please do not send children to school before then.

If work arrangements require an early start please arrange for before or after school care or alternatively make arrangements with friends or neighbours for the supervision of your children. Whatever arrangements you make, you need to understand that you remain legally responsible for your child prior to 8.25am when supervision begins.

FATHERS’ DAY STALL Our P&C will be holding their Fathers’ Day Stall on Friday 4 September. Students from every class will be given the opportunity to attend the stall and choose a gift. Prices will range from $2.00 to $5.00. Please remind students to bring a plastic or cloth bag to school to help them transport their gift home safely on the day. SOUTHERN CENTRAL COAST ZONE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL – CANCELLED Due to new restrictions imposed by the Department of Education, unfortunately the Southern Central Coast Zone Athletics Carnival has been cancelled. ERNIE’S SHED The children are making great use of our new outdoor learning centre (Ernie’s Shed). Classes are able to take the opportunity to learn outside in an engaging environment. Ernie’s Shed is also used by the children during recess and lunch time. SPORTING SCHOOLS GYMNASTICS Woodport has been successful at receiving a Sporting Schools grant in Term 3. Students in K-2 will participate in four gymnastic sessions led by professional gym instructors starting Week 7 - Friday 4 September. The next 3 sessions will be held on Friday in week 8, 9 and 10. Students will need to wear their sports uniform and bring a water bottle to school. STAGE 1 PIRATE DAY Stage 1 will be holding a Pirate Day on Tuesday 1 September. On this day students are invited to come to school dressed as a pirate and participate in lots of fun activities. We are looking forward to having a wonderful day and hope to find some treasure along the way. STAGE 3 TRANSITION TO HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM Due to COVID restrictions, the Erina High School transition to high school program for our Stage 3 students has been put on hold. BOOK WEEK This week is Book Week with our book character parade being held on Friday. This will commence at 9:05am and will include a very special performance. I hope you’ve all started working on your costume ideas for our parade. The theme for 2020 is: Curious Creatures Wild Minds. This theme allows for plenty of ideas to dress up as…pigeons, bears, Mike Wazowski, Dobby, Curious George or even aliens. The discussions in the library have led to many fantastic ideas for dressing up, with some students thinking of costumes that incorporate magic or wizardry. The best dressed boy and girl from each class will win a book prize. The Library will also be running an art competition to complement Book Week. Book Prizes will also be issued to the winners from each class.

Following the parade, students will be entertained by the Jolly Bops Science Show and attend the Book Fair. Permission notes have been sent home with the cost and all the details.

Students will have the opportunity to browse through the Scholastic Book Fair and write a wish list during their library time. Each class will be allocated a time on the day to visit the Fair and make purchases, there will be plenty of fantastic new releases for sale.

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions, no parents will be allowed on site during book week.

LEARNING SUPPORT In order to support your children, it is important that any report from a paediatrician is passed on to your child’s class teacher. A copy of this report will be given to Mrs Boland, the School Counsellors, Miss Fotini Koklas and Mrs Leanne Foubister and the Learning Support co-ordinator, Mr Day. This will ensure appropriate support is provided for your child. Please note that if you have younger children who are attending pre-school and in some cases are not commencing school until 2022 or 2023 support can be provided through the Department of Education’s Early Intervention program. If your child has a diagnosed disability, please contact Mr Day as soon as possible so that the process for Early Intervention can be explained and put into place as early as possible. STAGE 2 EXCURSION BATEAU BAY As part of our Science & Technology program, students from Stage 2 attended an excursion to Bateau Bay Beach to study coastal systems. In the photo below students in Year 4 can be seen enjoying the stunning views from Crackneck lookout before setting off on a bushwalk to Bateau Bay beach. With the expert assistance from teachers from Rumbalara Environmental Education Centre, students participated in field work studies that included; exploring adaptations of plants living on sandy dunes, searching for flotsam and jetsam washed up by the tides, measuring key indicators on rock platforms (temperature, salinity and PH) and exploring life in rock pools. Students were fascinated by the beautiful creatures living in the rock pools and asked many curious and interesting questions. Students are eager to follow up their learning in class by learning more about the adaptations and life cycles of these fascinating creatures and the ways they have evolved to survive the challenging conditions on rock platforms. Then they will explore the ways that humans have impacted on marine species and design solutions using applied knowledge and STEM skills.

Bateau Bay Excursion by Luka M On Monday, Year 4 went to Bateau Bay for a bush walk, to explore the rockpool and the beach. Firstly, during the bush walk we stopped and put charcoal on our face. Then we got to the rockpools. After the bushwalk we got to the rockpools, we put cones around each sight. The group I was in used a special thermometer to measure the temperature of the rocks. Next we saw creatures around the rockpools, a Neptune necklace, ghost crab, elephant snail and a starfish. Then we used a magnifying glass to look at nature and at different things on the grass like flowers. Lastly, we had a quick lunch and then we had to build what we saw down at the beach out of sticks and leaves. My favourite part of the excursion was the bush walking.

Bateau Bay Excursion by Nicola F

Last Friday Stage Two went on an excursion to Bateau Bay beach. We left at 8:55am and travelled by bus. Firstly we walked down the slippery, brown, wooden stairs and we eventually reached the grainy, golden sand. We then made our way over to the rock platforms but we slowly had to walk over the green algae. After that we took pictures with the Ipads and Annika found Jimbo the crab who was orange, white and purple. Then we were trying to measure the salinity, rock temp, water temperature and the PH level with the help of the Rumbalara worker but even then it was still pretty hard to get the thermometer to work. Then we measured Jimbo the crabs temperature which was 12.1’c. We then came back to the sand and were looking for manmade and natural things. Annika, Jess and I found many things and I found sea sponges, cuttlefish, shells and driftwood. After that we had to make an advertisement for something that we found, we did the doggy yum yum which was something chewy that you feed to your dog once a month. Then we looked at rocks and sat down to eat our lunch, I had a vegemite bread roll. We made a sandcastle which was a volcano and I used a golf ball to make a perfect whole for the middle. I loved the excursion but not the toilets. They were horrendous!

It's the final countdown! The Challenge is quickly drawing to an end, with student entries closing this Friday. Friday August 28: Final date for entry of Student Reading Records by students. Friday September 11: Final date for validation of Student Reading Records by coordinators.

STAGE 3 NEWS Students have loved Scope IT sessions this term and in Stage 3, we are now ready for the next phase of the course. Students will use the skills they have learnt so far to design buildings and open spaces in line with our Science and Technology unit on urbanisation, with a view to 3D printing. Effective collaboration and communication processes are highlighted and valued, with students excited and motivated to use their imaginations to develop a variety of structures. We look forward to seeing what the student teams create over the coming weeks!

Year 5 are working on creating circuits and using coding skills to program these circuits with various LED lights.

ERNIE REWARDS DAY – TERM 3 – GOLD COIN DONATION FOR STEWART HOUSE On Monday 21 September, we will be holding our Term 3 Rewards Day. Students

have been working hard to earn plenty of Ernie’s to cash in on their chosen activities. Activities on the day will include: movie slumber party, disco, bingo, cooking, Lego, board games, art and sports.

Each activity will adhere to COVID-19 safe practices in line with Department policy. In partnership with our SRC, students have requested a fundraiser in support of Stewart House. On Rewards Day, we will therefore ask students to come dressed in mufti and bring a gold coin donation for Stewart House. Clothing should be sun safe (no exposed shoulders), closed toe shoes such as joggers and school hat. Stewart House has been chosen by the SRC as a selected charity as each year 1,700 public school children in need attend Stewart House from many parts of NSW and the ACT. During their stay, children are provided with optometric, dental and medical treatment as well as emotional support. This is balanced with health and educational programs and out of school activities to boost their self-esteem and to promote a healthier lifestyle. Children in the care of Stewart House attend a specific purpose school onsite for up to 12 days. The NSW Department of Education provides infrastructure and staffing support for this school. All other costs associated with the children are met by charitable donations made by NSW Public School teachers.

HELPING YOUR CHILD AT HOME – How You Can Help

Each fortnight we will include some tips for helping your child at home.

The early years of schooling are especially critical for handwriting instruction; once children have formed counterproductive habits in handwriting, such as poor pencil hold or inefficient letter formation, those habits can be difficult to change. Here are a few specific suggestions for teaching handwriting: Teach children consistent formation of letters using a continuous stroke if possible Children should learn a highly consistent way to form a given letter every time they write it. Although some letters, such as f and t, require lifting the pencil from the paper to make a second stroke, teach letter formation using a continuous stroke (without lifting the pencil from the paper) when possible. For example, teach children to write the letter b by starting at the top with a vertical stroke, then making the loop to the right without lifting the pencil, rather than having children form the vertical line and the loop in separate strokes. Focus initially on learning the motor pattern rather than perfect legibility or size When children are learning to form a new letter, it is helpful to begin with large movements such as forming the letter in the air; have children use a sweeping movement with the entire arm, not just the hand. This initial practice should emphasise learning the motor pattern with correct formation of the letter (e.g. as discussed for the letter b above) rather than writing the letter on paper with perfect legibility or size. Teach similarly formed letters together, and use an instructional sequence that takes into account both ease of formation and frequency in words For instance, the letters c, a, and d all begin with the same loop and can be taught in one group; i should be taught before y because it is simpler to form and is needed more frequently to write words. Separate reversible letters such as b and d. Children appear less likely to confuse visually similar letters if they have learned one letter of a confusable pair well prior to introduction of the other letter of the pair. In addition, it can be helpful to teach children to form confusable letters differently; for example, b starts at the top whereas d starts with the loop. Use written arrow cues to help children remember how to form letters. Written arrow cues for tracing dotted letters and copying letters are important so that children do not inadvertently practise incorrect letter formation repeatedly. In teaching cursive, explicitly teach connections between letters as well as formation of single letters. Unlike printing, cursive writing involves making connections between letters within a word. Once children can form individual letters, explicit teaching of letter connections is important. Connections involving four letters — cursive b, o, v, and w — followed by a subsequent letter (e.g., as in the words bed, on, have, will) are often especially confusing for children, because unlike most cursive connections, these do not involve going back down to the bottom line before writing the subsequent letter. Aim for speed as well as legibility. Whether children are learning manuscript or cursive, speed should not be emphasized until children can form letters legibly and from memory. With either form, however, children must eventually develop enough speed to use writing efficiently in tasks such as note-taking or test-taking. It also is useful to distinguish different stands for legibility depending on the purpose for writing; for example, in taking notes, “messy” handwriting is entirely acceptable as long as children can easily read their own writing.
