(dx) how can you find vy?

Projectile Launcher Mini

Project10/22/13

Objective: Objective: To launch an unmodified

cotton ball to a target that is 1.50 m away

Materials: file folder 1 piece of cardboard 5 index cards 5 paper clips 2 rubber bands

50 cm of string 200 g mass masking tape scissors ruler

Requirements Free standing and movable Only can use materials given Masking tape (adhesive use sparingly) Scissors and ruler (for construction only) Will be launched from the floor Group number and names NO trigger needed

Design Phase On a piece of paper draw or sketch your proposed

mini project with a 5 sentence description (1 per group).

When your group has a design show Mr. Z. to collect your materials.

Materials: 5 index cards, file folder, cardboard, 200 g mass, 5 paper clips, 2 rubber bands, 50 cm of string, masking tape (adhesive use sparingly), scissors & ruler (for construction only), and nothing else.

Construction Phase Free standing and movable Only can use materials given Masking tape (adhesive use sparingly) Scissors and ruler (for construction only) Will be launched from the floor Group number and names NO trigger needed You will have three tries to hit the target Hint: Your firing a cotton ball!

Testing Phase: Tomorrow Distance is measured from where it

lands from the target

Clean-Up Phase Return any unused materials AND

masking tape, scissors & ruler to side counter

Place launcher in the cabnet and make sure lab area is clean

Projectile Launcher Mini

Project(Day 2)

10/23/13

Bellwork Who are the targets for the projectile

projects? Mr. Z. will check off the homework

Testing Your group will be given 1 cotton ball to

test with at your lab bench (lengthwise is 1.50 m)

You will have 15 minutes to make any adjustments

You will be given 1 new cotton ball for the final test

Data Collecting Mr. Z. will measure the distances The “On-Deck” group will be given

stopwatches to time how long the ball in in the air for

You need to collect data for every group even your own

Clean-Up Masses, scissors, tape, rulers, etc. back

to the cart Stopwatch back in the bin Launcher in the trash or take home

Projectile Launcher Mini

Project(Day 3)

10/24/13

Bellwork How far is “CDO bear” (the target) going

to placed from the launching zone? 15.0 m (49.2 ft)

Projectile ProjectProjectile Project• Have to hit the target from the air, NOT

rolling along the ground

• 50.0 cm3, before launch

– If you are over then it will be launched at the end

• You may set it manually,

– after it is locked into place

– then only mechanical power

Calendar• Today – Finish the Mini-Project• Fri. 10/25 – Work day for the project or review• Mon. 10/28 – Launching Day • Wed. 10/30 – Review is due• Thur. 10/31 – Projectile Test Part 1: Multiple

Choice and Short Answer• Fri. 11/1 – Projectile Test Part 2: Projectile

Problems• Mon. 11/4 – Projectile Project Calculations

and Analysis due (New due date!)

Projectile Mini-ProjectCalculations: (In T-Charts)

Using your groups data (or another groups) for each trial (3 total) find:

a) Find the tennis ball’s horizontal velocity

b) Find the tennis ball’s vertical velocity

c) Find the tennis ball’s max height

d) Find the tennis ball’s resultant velocity

Conclusion: (In paragraph form) What was your furthest distance? How close were you from the target? How successful was your design? What problems did you encounter, during

construction and launching? What would you do differently if you did this

again? How did this activity help you with the

project?

Make-Up Assignment Research five past designs to launch projectiles.

(These can include non-mechanical designs.) Write a page (handwritten) in paragraph form that

includes: Five different designs that you have researched. The history of the designs. What is the purpose of these designs? Provide a summary on how these helped with your pro.

Reflection Phase 2012 version: (In complete sentences.) 1) What was your furthest distance? 2) How close was this to your prediction? 3) What worked well for your design? 4) What problems did you encounter? 5) What would you do differently if you did

this again? 6) How did this activity help you with the

project?
